Deanna Leimert (pronounced /ləˈmɜrt/) is a gnome cleric of Pelor. She is played by Aabria Iyengar.
Description[]
Appearance[]
Deanna stands about 3 feet tall[8], and has dark skin and chubby cheeks. When encountered by half of Bells Hells, she was wearing golden heavy plate, a massive symbol of the Dawnfather around her waist, a chunky knit pale pink sweater-shawl around her shoulders, and leather boots.[9]
Aabria described her as "built like a Pixar mom", with a tiny upper body and a "dump truck" ass.[10]
Personality[]
Although a generally happy person who tries to steer conversations away from "heavy" topics, Deanna seems filled with longing for the peace she found in death and was torn away from by her resurrection. She keeps being drawn back to Uthodurn because it feels like her home.[11]
When Chetney Pock O'Pea recalled her in a vision, he particularly remembered her laugh.[12] Later, F.R.I.D.A. teamed with her because they were drawn to the sound of her laughter.[13] Ironically, she also displays an occasional bloodlust not unlike her former fling's,[14] baffling to everyone else.[15]
Deanna likes being of service and helping people, and feels those are the only things tethering her to life right now.[16]
Biography[]
Background[]
Chetney Pock O'Pea and Deanna had a romantic relationship hundreds of years ago that began in a little vacation town on a beach in the Menagerie Coast, along the southern territory of the Clovis Concord.[17][18][19] When he left, ending it a little over 200 years ago in the mid-600s, she had a hard time letting it go and traveled to Uthodurn to see where Chetney came from. There, she met and married her husband Dustel, having children with him, including a daughter, Marney, who loved marionettes. However, at some point after 641 PD she and some friends were attacked during an event at the Midsummer Festival by a large creature, and she was killed. During that period of existence she was happy, describing death as being like a snowflake, melting into the immenseness of the ocean.[20] However, her husband became an adventurer, leaving their young children with his sister, and during that period of time the soul of Deanna was conscious enough to notice whenever Dustel had a near-death experience, and she would help him return to his body.[21] After almost 200 years her husband was able to find a cleric of the Dawnfather who resurrected Deanna between 841 and 842 PD. Dustel, despite having kept his promise to bring Deanna back, had moved on, so they didn't live together as husband and wife after she came back to life. Their children had grown up and didn't live in Uthodurn anymore, having families of their own elsewhere, so they didn't know their mother is alive again.[22]
At some point after her resurrection Deanna became a cleric of Pelor; another follower of this god had been responsible for bringing her back, she felt a connection, and lightly held onto it.[23] She moved into a home on the Volition Disk of Uthodurn, where her family had once lived, and earned a living selling her knitted goods and other wares.[24]
In the most recent trip FRIDA made with Deanna they visited Eiselcross following the gunslinger's dreams, and tried to find information about Aeor in its ruins, but encountered instead a lot of monsters and Xhorhasian soldiers.[25]
"Far From The Others" (3x52)[]
Chetney, Fresh Cut Grass, Imogen Temult, and Fearne Calloway encountered Deanna when she and F.R.I.D.A. came to the aid of the party when they were attacked by a frost salamander in the Crystalsands Tundra. They decided to join forces to make their way toward Uthodurn. While traveling together she showed some hostility around Chetney, given their complicated past, but little by little the interactions between the two softened, and she even cast Death Ward on him without him noticing.
"Ripples" (3x53)[]
Deanna spent the whole night waiting for Chetney after he transformed into a wolf and disappeared in the forest (attacking FRIDA in the process). When he came back he apologized to the other gnome, who healed him, and they continued traveling, although with the cleric of the Dawnfather way more exhausted. When they arrived to Uthodurn they visited the Vellum Steeple Archive, where Deanna tried an aggressive approach to get information, although in the end she apologized for it, asking instead for the safety of the locals after magic started working badly in the city.
Later, when they went to the Grand Disk to confront a dangerous beast who had been depetrified, Deanna cast Guardian of Faith to defend the people that hadn't been evacuated yet. When they found the animal, a celestial bull-like being called Umudara, the party ended up calming him down and leading him out of Uthodurn safely. Deanna helped by feeding the Sentinel Beast and casting Aura of Life on him while they were walking through the city.
"Treacherous Toys" (3x54)[]
After receiving the general admiration of the people of Uthodurn, as well as an invitation to meet the dual monarchs the next day, Bells Hells retired to Deanna's house for the night, and after deciding who would sleep with whom, Deanna and Imogen talked outside for a bit about the gnome's house (who smelled a bit like vinegar, although it wasn't that bad) and about how she had met Chetney, and how he had changed; the sorcerer assured the cleric that the blood hunter still thought about his old fling. The next morning Deanna made a delicious home-cooked breakfast for her friends, after which they decided to visit Chetney's old working place, now called D&O Toy Emporium (Deanna failed to knit a fake beard that would disguise Chetney), and discovered that Oltgar Dradegon and his new partner, Drixlitch Ovana, had a problem due to some pymon firebugs. Bells Hells agreed to help them in exchange for money and the opportunity to inspect the workplace, and during that conversation Deanna offered some of the leftovers of her breakfast to Oltgar.
Inside the shop, Deanna tried to speak with the firebugs and for a while they remained calm; however, when they tried to trap them the swarm became aggressive and a battle ensued, during which the cleric tried to talk to them several times, although she also used her Inflict Wounds to defeat several of them; since she was walking very slowly, both Imogen and FRIDA helped her move faster through the battlefield. Later, Deanna was the one that found Drixlitch's pet craskkalid, now in its monstrous adult form, when she cast Dawn in the room where it lived; during that combat she maintained the Dawn while using other spells against the monster, and after they finished she cast Mass Cure Wounds to heal her friends. When the group talked to Oltgar, initially Deanna started Mending some of the damage of the shop, but after exposing the shady deals Drixlitch had involving child labor and the dwarf's eventual early death, the group convinced him to leave Uthodurn and his business behind, so the treacherous elf dealt with the consequences of his actions.
"Hope Within History" (3x55)[]
On their way to the meeting with the dual monarchs Bells Hells found Jerena, the guard whose life they saved the day before, and Deanna, noticing she was still injured, cast Cure Wounds to help her heal. In the meeting with Simone Fruunast and Imathan Talviel they interacted first with Deanna, since she was from the city, and after a long conversation about the solstice, Ludinus, and a potential journey to the ruins of Molaesmyr, the cleric cast Bless on the king and queen, assuring them that even if it felt like the gods weren't there, they were still present. . After the meeting FRIDA had a brief private chat with Deanna, admiting they have a crush on FCG, and she supported their feelings (leading to FRIDA pointing that Chetney was a nice man for their friend). When she returned to the Vellum Steeple and talked to Keenash Serevoldin, an explorer, she bragged about her own travels to Eiselcross. She later visited the Light Above Sanctum to speak with the clergy of the Dawnfather, talking with Evodon Leeds and consoling him, since Pelor's estrangement made him feel very bad; she also made a donation of 500 gold pieces to the temple, which would pay for many meals, after which Leeds, feeling a bit better, let the people inside the temple again.
At Catlyn's Clothier Deanna acquired a new outfit that flattered her figure, and accepted her friends' request of having some additional pieces knitted by herself, starting while the outfits where being made. When they returned to Deanna's Chetney talked to her for a bit, confirming that she and FRIDA were going to accompany them in that next adventure; the cleric drank a lot with Fearne and Imogen and gossiped a bit about FRIDA and FCG getting romantically involved, getting really excited when she heard them kiss through the thin wall between the rooms. The next morning Deanna cast Lesser Restoration to remove her hangover, and prepared a wonderful breakfast, after whichthe adventurers got flot goats to travel through the mountains, and the gnome chose a very fluffy specimen that she named Jerry.
"By Goat or By Boat" (3x56)[]
Deanna and her friends successfully traversed the Flotket Alps (she even helped stop a frost giant attack) and reached the Boreal Omen River. Guided by the cleric, the adventurers built a raft in order to reach Molaesmyr faster by following the course of the river; that night, after FRIDA asked her to prioritize FCG's safety over their own, Deanna talked to the other cleric, having a conversation with him about relationships (his with FRIDA and her past with Chetney), whereupon she agreed to place her Death Ward in FCG; shortly after they spoke again, this time about religion, after FCG Communed for the first time with Avandra. That good impression on the Changebringer caused the gnome to alter her Death Ward protecting FCG the next day to sport the symbol of the goddess of luck instead of the Dawnfather's.
After realizing they couldn't take the goats with them in the raft Deanna quickly killed Jerry, assisted by Chetney, harvesting its wool and meat, and scaring Imogen, who was wary of the cleric while they traveled through the river, leaving the rest of the surviving goats behind. When they were already in the Savalirwood and they approached a bog wretch and a group of pixies Deanna cast Control Water to try to speed up the raft and avoid a confrontation, but they ended up fighting, killing the bigger monster and scaring the tiny fey away with Deanna's water. After the battle the cleric was somewhat angry at FRIDA's recklessness, but later, when it was mentioned that the gunslinger might have contracted lycanthropy, Deanna assured them that she could remove the curse if they wished. At one point both Deanna and Fearne were weakened by a miasma emitted from cracks in the forest floor (because Chetney didn't warn them in time), but they nonetheless kept pace with the group as they entered the ruins of Molaesmyr.
"The Sorrow of Molaesmyr" (3x57)[]
While exploring the ruins, Deanna's magic proved very useful in dealing with the ghosts that resisted her Turn Undead ability (she even used her Greater Restoration to expel one that was possessing Chetney) and to evade the fearsome Wolf-King, whom she distracted with a Guardian of Faith that looked like werewolf Chetney. Further, her knowledge of the Elvish language helped the party read signs and, upon reaching the Gildhollow Tower (where she Dispelled an arcane trap), decipher Ludinus Da'leth's notes still remaining in the building.
"Escape From The Past" (3x58)[]
After fighting against a hatemonger in the Gildhollow Tower (during which Deanna gave Chetney her Death Ward and healed a very weakened Fearne), Bells Hells left the ruins and went to the forest, where they inspected the magical bag that used to belong to Ludinus. Deanna's Detect Magic revealed Elvish notes about a magical harness in papers that seemed to be empty, so the gnome started reading them for her friends. Later, when Imogen and FCG were about to delve into FRIDA's mind with Detect Thoughts, Deanna noticed the sorcerer's hesitance, so she gave her her blanket and kissed her in the forehead for Guidance; after his experience FRIDA was worried and rejected Deanna's attempt to hug them, making her emotional.
Chetney went to comfort her, and the two gnomes had a heart-to-heart in which they both expressed their mutual concern for each other's safety. He gave her a carved wooden conch shell, and they began flirting, leading to a passionate night in the woods that Fearne joined at Deanna's request.
Before the group left the Savalirwood, while Avandra was warning FCG about Predathos through his Commune spell, Pelor sent a vision to Deanna with the same intention, although more demanding (which bothered the cleric, since she was already willing to help in that mission). After Deanna gave Chetney her Ring of Temporal Salvation and she revealed the properties of a rod that used to belong to Ludinus, the whole group (using the Staff of Dark Odyssey held by Imogen) Teleported.
"Reunited" (3x64)[]
After two failed Teleports, Team Wildemount finally arrived on a mountainside where Deanna immediately cast Mass Cure Wounds on the battered group. After a brief confrontation with the birdfolk inhabitants, during which Deanna failed her attempt of Divine Intervention to calm the local guards down, she was unsympathetic towards FCG's emotional break, telling him not to make his emotions other people's problems. The party Teleported safely to Jrusar the next morning. At Imogen's request, Deanna successfully Scryed on Laudna, discovering her alive and well in a cavern. When the group was talking to Pretty in the Sooth and Swill the cleric noticed some imperfections in the ogre's pajamas and tried to fix it; he noticed and stopped her, but after she explained her intentions, she was allowed to finish her job for the now happy Pretty. Once the party arrived at the Spire by Fire Inn, Deanna rented a room there, leaving a message for Team Issylra if they were to arrive while the rest of the party was out. However, they appeared almost immediately thereafter and the two groups exchanged joyful greetings and caught each other up.
Deanna was disturbed by some of Prism Grimpoppy's remarks about the Dawnfather and went off privately to cast Commune, asking Pelor if working with Bells Hells would save the gods. The Dawnfather didn't reply, not knowing the answer. She then asked if his disciples were perpetuating harm in the world at his behest, and he responded that they were doing what was necessary for the good of "our people" collectively and the future of Exandria. Her final question: Are you worth saving? She was forcefully thrust out of the communion and rejoined the others.
Orym then asked Deanna to try Scrying on his home using the remnants of the Message Bloom seed. The spell succeeded despite the apparent reluctance of the Dawnfather to aid Deanna, and she saw Keyleth alive but badly injured. She used Mending on the seed before returning it. It was decided that Deanna, Prism, and FRIDA would separate from the others to do research at the libraries in both Jrusar and Vasselheim, and in farewell, Deanna told Chetney, "Don't die. I love you." As the groups separated, Deanna covered every symbol of the Dawnfather on her clothing with yarn.
Relationships[]
Chetney Pock O'Pea[]
Deanna and Chetney had a romantic relationship hundreds of years ago (during which she hand knit the hat that Chetney still wears),[26] that ended before Deanna would have chosen. She still responds badly to mention of Frudell, another former lover of Chetney's, snapping, "We don't talk about her."[27] While Chetney described "nights of white-hot passion", Deanna called it a fling that didn't last that long, although it didn't end when she wanted it to end.[28]
Deanna still feels attraction towards Chetney, even in his werewolf form,[29] which led to them sharing a passionate night in the woods with Fearne.[30]
When Chetney was knocked unconscious for the second time in the battle against Otohan Thull on Ruidus, he whispered Deanna's name.[31]
F.R.I.D.A.[]
Deanna and FRIDA have a very close and affectionate relationship. Prior to their encounter with Chetney and some of the other members of Bells Hells, Deanna had cast Death Ward on FRIDA every morning. When FRIDA realize it had been cast on Chetney instead, they were thoughtful. FRIDA chose to go searching for Chetney (after he had run into the woods because of his forced transformation into werewolf form) because Deanna was clearly worried about him, despite the obvious danger. When FRIDA was attacked and wounded by Chetney, Deanna was distraught, immediately healing them with her full Preserve Life. Deanna threatened to kill Chetney bloodily when he returned, responding, "Fuck him!" when FRIDA tried to reassure her that Chetney was still inside the beast.
The friends love each other very much, but FRIDA tends to display some level of recklessness that makes Deanna worry about their safety.[32]

Quotations[]
- Deanna: (about Chetney) He's a jackass, but I don't think he's bad.
F.R.I.D.A.: If my assessment is correct, I think he may still have a thing for you.[77] - Deanna: (to Chetney) You're kind of the first thing from my life before that didn't hurt to see again, so thanks.[78]
- Deanna: Our relationship, of mortals and gods, it's not like a parent and a child. We're not their children. We're their batteries. Our faith and our devotion feeds and sustains them, gives them power, and they see fit on occasion to give sips of that power back, I think to inspire further faith.[79]
- Deanna: I'm nervous all the time. I died and came back and then everything was different and my best friend in the whole world kind of has a death wish sometimes. [...] I choose to put my faith in this world a little more than the gods.[80]
Trivia[]
- Her name is a modern variant of Diana, which traced back to the Proto-Indo-European roots can mean "divine", "light" or "celestial".[81] It can also be interpreted as the feminine form of Dean, which may derive (according to one of its etymologies) from Middle English dene, meaning "valley".
- Deanna and her husband share the surname Leimert,[82] but it is unknown if he took her name or she took his.
- Aabria confirmed that Dustel was still alive at the time she met Bells Hells, although very old.[83]
- Deanna knits, and created the shawl-like sweater she wears herself over about twelve hours.[84]
- It is possible that Frudell, another lover of Chetney, was involved in their breakup.[85]
- Since Deanna was dead for more than a century but less than two centuries, she was presumably brought back with a True Resurrection spell, which consumes diamonds worth 25,000gp.
- Deanna mentioned that she had been resurrected between 841 and 842 PD, but she also told her friends that after coming back to life she had been living in her old house for four years,[86] placing her resurrection in 839 PD. It is currently unknown if this contradiction was deliberate or if it was a mistake.
- Since FRIDA spent some time in Uthodurn before meeting Deanna for the first time, that suggests that Deanna returned to Uthodurn at some point after FRIDA's arrival in 841 PD, although it is not confirmed.
- Initially Aabria and Christian Navarro had discussed the possibility of their characters developing a romance with each other, but that idea was discarded and they stayed as close friends instead, being FCG the object of FRIDA's romantic affection.[87]
- Deanna, Chetney, and Fearne had the first threesome between player characters in a Critical Role campaign.[88]
- This is not, however, the first threesome in Critical Role canon, since Caleb Widogast, Astrid Becke, and Eadwulf Grieve were in a polyamorous relationship during their time as Trent Ikithon's students;[89] it was also heavily implied that Lucien Tavelle and Brevyn Oakbender had a threesome with a "nubile elf".[90]
