Darkmantles are small, flying predators living in caves, hunting by using camouflage and magical darkness to surprise, envelop, and crush their prey.
Attracted by sound, these creatures cling in wait upside-down on the tunnel's ceiling, appearing as stalactites to unwary prey. Dropping down and opening up like an umbrella, these creatures clamp down onto the heads of their victims.[6]
Appearance[]
This pitch black and grey spine octopus-type creature was naturally camouflaged to look like cavern rock. At the top of its face it had deep sunk red eyes.[7]
Abilities[]
These creatures had the ability to create spheres of magical darkness.[8]
History[]
Traversing a river that passes the subterranean tunnels of Zadash, the Mighty Nein encountered three darkmantles but easily defeated them, avoiding creature of the more serious danger. Large figures covered in greenish algae and vines, "looking like they're made of earth and stone". They move slowly, crawling across the ground and pulling their body forward. They do not have feet.[9]
