Culpasi is one of the Somnovem of the mutated Cognouza Ward of the city of Aeor. As an NPC, Culpasi is played by Matthew Mercer.

Description[]

Appearance[]

Culpasi's appearance, age and race prior to the flight of Cognouza into the Astral Plane and its subsequent transformation are unknown.

When Lucien was just resurrected Culpasi appeared to him in a dream, at first as a shapeless figure made of black sand, but soon after taking a more solid male form. During their conversation four white eye-like dots appeared in his head.[1] He wore an embroidered gray robe.[2]

Biography[]

Culpasi was one of the nine leaders, the Somnovem, of the Aeorian neighborhood called Cognouza.[3] Those leaders led the ward to escape the destruction of Aeor by the gods and transport themselves into the Astral Sea, where they encountered a "psychic storm that wracked every mind and spirit and shattered them until they became one with their own city."[4] "Thousands of people and the Somnovem that guided them were broken, and over time slowly reformed, powerful, the instinct of their dreams driving them, in a place where they could will their dreams to be, were their will not so fragmented."[5]

In 836 PD the first time Lucien Tavelle rested after being resurrected he dreamed with Auntie Mama's house, and in that dream Culpasi appeared to restate the tiefling's condition as the Nonagon, as well as to confirm that he still had memories of the Somnovem.[6]

Culpasi has not been encountered by the party, but their named eye attack by Lucien (when he was transformed into the composite Neo-Somnovem) caused intense guilt that could be resisted by a constitution saving throw. The guilt caused disadvantage on saving throws[7] and psychic damage whenever the target hit the enemy.[8]

Quotations[]

  • Culpasi: "We're friends, Nonagon. You know me. I've been in your head a hundred hundred times. Don't you know me? Don't you remember? The dreams? Our dreams? You're breaking my heart here."[10]

Trivia[]

  • The name "Culpasi" may be derived from the Latin word culpa (blame, fault). Appropriately, his demeanor tended towards nervousness and remorse (his own and the one he caused in others).
