Couatls are intelligent celestial serpents with feathered wings.
Appearance[]
A couatl appears as a serpent with brilliantly feathered wings, and its eggs are gem-like.[1] The first one Caduceus Clay conjured had an elemental appearance, appearing at first like a slow-moving lightning bolt.[2]
Abilities[]
The following is all taken from the Monster Manual (2014), 5th Edition, p. 43.
- Saving throw proficiencies: CON, WIS, CHA
- Damage resistance: radiant
- Damage immunities: psychic; nonmagical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing
- Innate Spellcasting: Can cast the following with only verbal components.
- At will: Detect Evil and Good, Detect Magic, Detect Thoughts
- 3/day each: Bless, Create Food and Water, Cure Wounds, Lesser Restoration, Protection from Poison, Sanctuary, Shield
- 1/day each: Dream, Greater Restoration, Scrying
- Magic Weapons: Weapon attacks are magical.
- Shielded Mind: immune to scrying[3] and magical effects that detect its location or sense its emotions or thoughts
- Actions:
- Bite: On a hit, the target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or be poisoned, causing it to go unconscious for 24 hours or until shaken awake.
- Constrict (Medium or smaller creatures): On a hit, the target is grappled and restrained.
- Change Shape: Can take the shape of a humanoid or beast—taking on only that creature's AC, movement modes, Strength, Dexterity, and other actions—or return to its original form.

- Caduceus Clay summoned a couatl to guard the Mighty Nein as they rested on the beach near Nicodranas.[4]
- Caduceus conjured another couatl to help put out the house fire after Trent Ikithon's attack on the Blooming Grove.[5]
- There are tales of a couatl spirit bound in the inner jungles of the Twinward Isles that offers wisdom to those who bring it offerings.[6]
