Constance Clay is the mother of Caduceus, Clarabelle, Colton, and Calliope.[1] As an NPC, she is played by Matthew Mercer.

Description[]

Constance is an older female firbolg with hair short on the sides almost like a soft mohawk that braids into a single long braid down the back.[2]

Biography[]

Background[]

In 827 PD, Constance left the Blooming Grove with Corrin,[3] seeking a solution to the encroaching corruption. She reached the Cinderrest Sanctum on Kravaraad, then made her way to the Menagerie, where she was ultimately petrified by a gorgon.

"Blessing in Disguise" (2x95)[]

The Mighty Nein found the petrified forms of Constance, Corrin, Cornelius and Calliope.

"Family Shatters" (2x96)[]

Jester Lavorre cast Greater Restoration on Constance, curing her of the petrification. She excitedly hugged Caduceus, but was horrified upon noticing the shattered remains of her sister Corrin, cradling her head in her arms. When she noticed Jester was trying to reassemble her, she immediately started helping. She readily gave Caleb permission to put her body in his Vault of Amber if they thought that was the best means of aiding her, then was joined by Cornelius to comfort her.

Constance explained her story to the Mighty Nein, while Caduceus introduced them. Upon further exploring the Stone temple, she found the intact petrified bodies of her children, Colton and Clarabelle.

The next morning, upon the restoration of the remaining members of the Clay family, Constance encouraged the family to thank Caduceus for saving them. After some consultation, Caleb used Teleportation Circle to transport the family to Uthodurn, as it was the closest he could get them to their home. The Mighty Nein rented rooms in the Broken Stool for them, and made arrangements for their friend Reani to escort them safely home through the Savalirwood. Before Caduceus left, she apologized for leaving him and asked him not to carry the burden of their mistakes and told him to take care of himself.

"The Calm Before the Storm" (2x130)[]

Constance and her family warmly welcomed the Mighty Nein to the Blooming Grove. Constance told them of the dreams the family had been having that seemed to bear an undercurrent of dread and warning, and seemed to have a connection to Caduceus. When Calliope attempted to persuade Caduceus to stay home instead of heading north to Aeor, Constance tried to interrupt her but was cut off. She displayed a maternal concern for her son, but seemed to already know what his response would be. When Caduceus confessed to eating certain flowers, Constance said he got that from his father.

"Into the Eye" (2x131)[]

As the Mighty Nein were leaving the Blooming Grove, Constance gave Caduceus her necklace so that part of his family would always travel with him. Veth also handed Constance a letter, asking her to pass it on to her own family should the Mighty Nein not return. Constance said she would be happy to do so, and commended Veth on her bravery.

"Fond Farewells" (2x141)[]

Constance and her family happily welcomed the Mighty Nein into their home, and allowed them to stay there for several weeks. When Trent Ikithon and his scourgers attacked the Blooming Grove, Constance was panicked and asked Caduceus what was going on. She followed the Nein's evacuation plan and after the battle began repairing her home alongside her family.

"The Mighty Nein Reunion: Echoes of the Solstice" (Sx79)[]

Years later, at the beginning of the apogee solstice of 843 PD, Constance greeted the members of the Mighty Nein that visited the Grove before a mission. As part of the preparations she gave them food, and although she was confused when Beauregard Lionett, in a hurry, took some of her patterns, she just said that she was glad the monk picked up stitching.

Quotations[]
