The Coin of the Changebringer is a humble-looking copper coin or medallion bearing the visage of the Changebringer. It has as-yet unrevealed magical properties.[1]
Properties[]
Once per day, the coin can be utilized for a specific task,[2] including:
- Guided Grace: The Changebringer will answer a simple question.
- Can be thrown at an adversary to distract them and give them disadvantage.
- Gives the equivalent of one luck point to grant a reroll.
History[]
Imahara Joe originally gave Fresh Cut Grass the medallion after telling them about "The Care and Culling", an event during the Age of Arcanum during which automatons acting as caretakers and helpful companions were created and distributed throughout Exandria by Aeorian political figures to their rivals. The Aeormatons suddenly killed the people they had been gifted to. FCG was shaken, believing they must be one of those assassins. Before they left, Joe gifted the still-shaken FCG a medallion of the Changebringer, saying he hoped it would help FCG find the right path.[3] Following that, FCG increasingly relied on the coin to make decisions by flipping it. When the results were not good, he found justifications and made excuses for the Changebringer.[4][5]
When FCG cast Commune and the Changebringer appeared following the Apogee Solstice, she told the Aeormaton to remain faithful and combat the awakening of the Red End. Following the encounter, he noticed the coin was now warm and shiny, and when he Identified it, learned it had acquired magical properties.[6]
After Bells Hells reunited in Jrusar and discovered (through FCG's Scrying) that Liliana Temult and Ludinus Da'leth were on Ruidus, the cleric, after seeing Exandria from space, used the new magic of his coin for the first time to ask if the planet was round, and the coin's answer was "yes".[7]
While traveling through the jungles of Kalutha, FCG used the coin's Guided Grace twice, first to decide the path they should follow (the right one).[8] The following day, when Bells Hells were about to enter the dark sinkhole where Evontra'vir was, FCG used the coin again, confirming they wouldn't die there, and reassuring Chetney, who was very interested in knowing Avandra's opinion of that place.[9]
The following day while Bells Hells were in Whitestone, Laudna walked away and Imogen was very worried about her, so FCG used the coin to confirm that Laudna was safe.[10] FCG later used the coin while the party was infiltrating the Ruidian terminus of the Bloody Bridge in order to re-roll a natural one on a Stealth check, saying that it wasn't luck, it was faith, so it was okay.[11]
After the Volition accepted Bells Hells as allies the adventurers discovered that they were planning an assassination attempt on Liliana Temult, which led them to question if they should allow it to happen or try to convince Imogen's mother to join their side. By tossing his coin FCG asked if Liliana could be redeemed, and although the connection with Avandra was weak the coin fell on its edge, meaning that the answer was not clear.[12]
The following day the adventurers fought Otohan Thull in the tunnels connecting Vaterra Kreviris with the surface. At one point, noticing how dangerous the fight was, FCG used the coin to ask Avandra if they should stay or run away, and the coin, once again, fell on its side.[13] The Aeormaton decided to stay to the very end, healing his friends and eventually sacrificing himself by holding the coin before him as he detonated his arcane core, destroying his own body but killing Otohan.[14] The coin, as a magic item, survived the detonation and ended up embedded in the surrounding stone, where Ashton Greymoore took it.[15]
Quotations[]
- Fresh Cut Grass: (about the Changebringer coin) I'm really drawn to it. It's little and it's metal, but it seems to have a purpose. I've been doing a lot of thinking about where I came from and who I am and who made me, but I think maybe I should just be looking ahead more at what I want to be, or what I should do, or what my purpose is.[16]
Trivia[]
- In normal circumstances, whenever the coin is tossed it produces the most perfect and clear sound a tossed coin can make.[17]
