"Cloak and Dagger (LoVM)" (LVM3x07) is the seventh episode of The Legend of Vox Machina, Season Three. In the ruins of Whitestone, Vox Machina makes a startling discovery - a clue from Ripley luring them to her remote island lair. Before they can resume the fight against the Chroma Conclave, they must deal with the serpent who's been nipping at their heels.
Plot summary[]
In a small, peaceful village in a valley, a young girl named Anna is working on repairing a broken mining cart. Suddenly, an alarm horn sounds and five flying mages of the Cerberus Assembly approach, sowing death and destruction as they come in search of the glowing blue ore from the local mines. Anna's father is killed as they flee. Returning to the present, Anna stands overlooking a massive factory floor.
Elsewhere, Whitestone is burying its dead from the dragon attack. Percival realizes the attack was a cover for Anna to steal all of their reserve of residuum, but she has left behind a tiny nugget of obsidian thermite, a rare rock scorched by divine fire during the Calamity. It is found only on the island of Glintshore. Vex'ahlia realizes that the stone was left behind purposefully.
Meanwhile in Nicodranas, Scanlan has arrived after his daughter Kaylie and her group Dr. Dranzel's Spectacular Traveling Troupe have already left town.
Percy tells Vex he wants to tell the rest of the group about their relationship, but she is reluctant. Actually, the entire group knows exactly what's been going on. Leaving Trinket behind, they fly to Glintshore to confront Ripley. On Vex's broom, she and Percy scout the island, finding a guarded mine entrance with a heavily trapped path leading there. As the group travels, Percy confesses to Vex that he's in love with her, leaving her speechless and unable to respond.
The group reaches the now-unguarded mine, and the distracted Vex accidentally triggers a delirium gas trap that causes all of them to hallucinate their worst nightmares. Percy relives his torture and interrogation by Ripley and sees the flaming figure of Orthax. His unconscious body is dragged off by unseen figures. Vex sees a vision of her deceased mother standing in the flaming ruins of their village, Byroden, telling her she caused it and that her love kills.
Percy wakes up, wearing a gas mask, hands bound, overlooking Ripley's munitions factory. Ripley greets him, showing him the giant battery that combines the magic of Cabal's Ruin, steam locomotion, and residuum. Because the Plate of the Dawnmartyr was a forgery, however, the machinery power surges once an hour. Ripley invites him to join her in this project but he refuses, saying he is rid of Orthax now. Orthax, however, disagrees, and Percy learns Orthax will receive the souls of all those slain by his guns. Saying he accepts her bargain, Percy extends a hand to Ripley but when she takes it he triggers Diplomacy, shocking her and escaping. Furious, Anna tells Orthax he is welcome to Percival's soul as he runs through the factory, pursued by Ripley and her guards. Percy is wounded, but not brought down, and seizes several weapons to fire back with. Anna transforms into a multi-armed semi-hybrid of Orthax and continues trying to kill him.
Meanwhile, the rest of Vox Machina is still hallucinating. Pike flashes back to Zerxus telling her the Everlight will not be there when Pike needs her, and to put her faith in no one but herself. She eventually regains her senses but when she tries to use her holy symbol to restore Keyleth, it fails to work. Instead, she uses her own blood, and one by one the others are brought back to reality, but Pike's energies are spent.
Percival is getting the worst of the battle against Ripley and the shadow demon. He finds himself in a store room holding barrels of black powder and sets an ambush for them, wounding Anna terribly. He holds her at point-blank gunpoint, but drops the weapon, saying he's done with vengeance. He understands what it is to hold the demon within oneself, and offers to help her. As she reaches out a hand to seemingly accept this, she triggers a concealed pistol and fires, hitting Percy in the heart. Mortally wounded, he whispers "Vex," as he dies.
Vox Machina arrives minutes later, finding his lifeless body and no sign of Ripley, who has reached her ship and sails away. Pike can do nothing for Percival, and Vex is distraught, cradling his body as she cries.
