Description[]

Appearance[]

Charlotte Eaves is an adult woman with long reddish-brown hair. Her attire and appearance are very put together and lends itself to a professional/business attire look of the period and is accented by splashs of scarlet red clothing. Following a week of constantly going to and from her mentor Gertrudes's Library, as she was staying with her following the events of Assignment #442: Ravage of Red Lamp, and pouring over texts and writing out notes; her appearance has become slightly less put together, and the stress has turned a few strands of her hair grey.

Personality[]

Charlotte has "a particular personality that can smooth over certain transgressions" for those looking to use the Sight Unseen as an alibi.[2]

Biography[]

Background[]

Charlotte grew up poor, but she aspired to more and resented her family for being satisfied with their lot.[3] One day, when she was about the age that Auggie James is now[4] (in her teens or early twenties), she was crossing a field when she saw a crack in the sky above the house in which her family lived. She felt sucked toward it but managed to hold on to a tree. The house, however, was pulled crumbling into the crack, which then disappeared with her family inside. Charlotte made her way to Gertrude, a woman who was her friend and mentor, told her that her family had abandoned her, and Gertrude took her in.[5][6]

Later, Charlotte found Gertrude with a strange device in her library that bore a crack like that she had seen in the sky, bringing the suppressed memories of what had happened flooding back. Gertrude then brought Charlotte into Candela Obscura, when she was 21.[7][8][9] Gertrude is now elderly and her mind is wandering, but Charlotte continues to visit her.[10]

Charlotte has a small cot with a rumpled blanket and a pillow in her office that gives her memories of good times.[11]

Auggie James had done odd jobs for Charlotte at the Sight Unseen since he was about 10 years old, well prior to their first adventure together as members of Candela Obscura.[12] Charlotte occasionally allowed Auggie to sleep in a back room when it was cold.[13]

Quotations[]

  • Charlotte: Gertrude, ma'am.
Gertrude: Oh, dear. You've walked to a threshold, haven't you? I'm so sorry. A little part of us goes away each time we do.
Charlotte: I can't help but remember what it was like when I first came to you. When you took me in. And while this is terrifying, I think of that young man that I took in, and I don't want anything to happen to him, ever. When you were scared, how did you keep going?
Gertrude: I just did. What other choice is there?
    Charlotte: True.
Gertrude: The longer you live this life, the more you realize that if you don't make the sacrifice, who else will?
Charlotte: I'm so sorry you sacrificed so much for me.
Gertrude: I'm not. I'm not at all.
Charlotte: You'd be proud of me. This young man is... well, you'd be proud of him.
Gertrude: I already am. [...] Whatever you're willing to give, they're willing to give more. So give everything.[16]
