Cathmoíra was a city built during the Age of Arcanum, formed when the flying city of Avalir removed the peak of the town of Toramunda, leaving Cathmoíra as a ring around the former Mount Ygora.

Description[]

Cathmoíra was located on a continent known as Domunas, around the base of what was once Mount Ygora. The city formed a ring around the massive basin reserved for Avalir to dock with.[2]

Three ancient ley lines converged at Cathmoíra.[3]

Points of interest[]

  • Alcald's House, home to Eaedalus, Nydas Okiro's brother.[4]
  • The Giants' Slumber, the grove of the Gau Drashari.[5] It was situated on the opposite side of the ring from the Alcald's home.[6]

History[]

Background[]

Cathmoíra was founded when the ancient Gau Drashari druidic settlement of Toramunda was split so that Avalir could take to the skies. Toramunda was located on and around the brumestone-filled Mount Ygora, a place holy to the druids because it was legendarily the location where the Dawnfather and the Wildmother defeated two of the greatest primordials of the continent of Domunas during the Schism. It was permeated with elemental magic, tended to by the druids, which also attracted wizards to the area. Archmage Imyr Por'co had the idea to separate the top half of the mountain into a flying city, and in reparation to the druids, agreed to The Replenishment, whereby Avalir returns every seven years to return its accumulated magical Ether into the earth to replenish its magic.[7]

The eve of the Calamity[]

The day before the Replenishment, the people of Cathmoíra, as was tradition, sent spell kites to now nearby Avalir, sharing gifts with their loved ones from the City of Crowns as they prepared to unite the two cities. However, while the City of Thrones was celebrating, different forces were preparing in Avalir to benefit from the Replenishment and the energy used for it.

At some point during the night, the Tree of Names was destroyed, and the Lord of the Hells tricked Zerxus Ilerez, First Knight of Avalir, into helping him enter Exandria, after which his devil forces attacked both Avalir and Cathmoíra. Loquatius Seelie was able to alert both cities so people would start evacuating, and Zerxus even visited the city in the ground, making sure that the family of the alcald, Eaedalus Okiro, was all right, since his son Elias was staying with them. The Ring of Brass of Avalir, after ensuring that good parts of the populations of both cities would escape, focused on thwarting Asmodeus's plans of joining forces with the Emperor of Fire and the Empress of Earth, weaponizing Laerryn Coramar-Seelie's Astral Leywright to send the two titans outside Exandria as soon as they were freed from their prison.

Cathmoíra was destroyed after Avalir landed, by the energy generated from the release and destruction of the two primordial titans, which also annihilated the entire continent of Domunas.

Legacy[]

One of its inhabitants, Elias (the son of Evandrin Alterra and Zerxus), fled to the Astral Plane with Tempus, his father's griffon, reuniting there with the astral form of Evandrin.

Despite the destruction of the continent, a necropolis connected to the city survived, and inside, a shard of the Empress of Earth remained. Hundreds of years later, at the beginning of the 9th century, Efterin, following the clues granted by the Great Tree of Atrophy, found the necropolis and the primordial relic.[8]

Trivia[]

  • Cath moíra translates to "great battle" in Gaelic. The name itself seems to be a reference to the final fate of the city, as the battlefield of the very beginning of the Calamity.
  • Eadalus Okiro bears the title "alcald". "Alcalde" is a mayoral title in some Spanish-speaking countries.
