A Cape of the Mountebank is a cloak that offers one cast of the Dimension Door spell once a day.[1]
Description[]
Appearance[]
The cape is red and smells faintly of brimstone.[1]
Effects[]
While wearing the cape, the wearer can use it to cast the Dimension Door spell as an action. This property of the cape can't be used again until the next dawn.[1]
When the wearer disappears, they leave behind a cloud of smoke, and they appear in a similar cloud of smoke at their destination. The smoke lightly obscures the space they left and the space they appear in, and it dissipates at the end of their next turn. A light or stronger wind disperses the smoke.[1]
Appearances[]
Campaign One: Vox Machina[]
- "Race to the Ziggurat" (1x34): Vax'ildan used the cloak to Dimension Door to the other side of the glass barrier trapping Vox Machina in an attempt to find the button to release them.[6]
- "Cindergrove Revisited" (1x46): Vax used the cape's Dimension Door ability to envelop and finally destroy a portal to the Elemental Plane of Fire, after it had been shrunk by others in the party. The cloak did not survive afterward.[7]
Campaign Two: The Mighty Nein[]
- "Hunter and Hunted" (2x133): Cree used the cloak to teleport herself and Lucien away from the Mighty Nein while within the ruins of Aeor.[8]
- "Where There Is a Will..." (2x138): Cree attempted to use the cape to escape from the Mighty Nein but the teleport was negated by a Counterspell from Fjord.[9] The Nein retrieved the cape from her remains and confirmed it as a Cape of the Mountebank through Identify. It passed into Beauregard Lionett's possession.[5]
