The Callisters were a noble family in Gwessar that pledged allegiance to Bane, the Strife Emperor.

History[]

During the Calamity, the Callisters dedicated their own resources to support the cause of the Strife Emperor in their continent; under his shadow they prospered, remaining wealthy and privileged while most of the world struggled, although also cruel within their own household.[1] Lord Callister, specifically, was a worshiper of Asmodeus, and in the last decade of the Calamity followed the plan devised by the archdevil: he and his wife produced a child that, despite being biologically alive, lacked emotions and a soul because should the need arise, he would act as a vessel for the Lord of the Hells.[2]

Days before the Divergence, since they had the respect of the lieutenants of the Great Emperor, Lord and Lady Callister (along with their child, Timothy) visited Rybad-Kol and had dinner with other important figures, and were served the best food available. That evening, in the Steel Keep, they discussed the state of the war. Lord Callister commented that not all the Betrayer Gods were as efficient as their own lord, explaining that other than him, the only ones that hadn't been sealed yet were the Scaled Tyrant, the Lord of the Hells, and the Chained Oblivion (who was not to be trusted anyway). During the conversation their son was fidgeting and ignoring his parents, and at his mother's request for his father to help, Lord Callister stabbed his hand with a knife to make him stay still (surprising even the fiendish diners at the table). His father then continued as if nothing had happened, and suggested that the Strife Emperor should focus on freeing his allies from imprisonment rather than fighting alone. In response, High Priestess Sata'al pointed out that if the Betrayer Gods managed to win the war, the Emperor would only have to share Exandria with the Scaled Tyrant and Asmodeus. While they were talking Timothy remained silent, with the knife still in his hand, and when he noticed that the waitress, Fiedra Marrow, was avoiding his eyes, he whispered he wouldn't want to help him either; in response, she poured a bit of wine in his glass, telling him it was the best she could do, and he used it to clean his wound.[3] Shortly afterwards, however, the Strife Emperor and many of the Prime Deities battled at the prison, and the forces aligned with the Betrayer Gods were annihilated.

Lord Callister and his son survived and made their way to Vasselheim. When Fiedra tracked them down and broke into their room as they slept, she held out the Infiltrator's Key in dagger form to Lord Callister's neck and woke him. Instead of agreeing to talk, he Charmed her, took the key, and attacked Fiedra until she was unconscious. Before she could bleed out, Crokas finally found her, climbed through the window, and posed enough of a threat that Lord Callister had to use his last spell to Charm him as well. Lord Callister suggested that Crokas let him go and take care of his friend, and he left with the key. While in possession of the vestige, he spoke with the Lord of the Hells, who congratulated him on finding the item and told him to "find them as only a mortal can" because the Divine Gate was almost finished.[4] In the following weeks the Callisters looked for the proper place to use the Infiltrator's Key, eventually finding an empty chapel of the Moonweaver in which the warlock contacted the Nine Hells and summoned their forces. Fiedra, Crokas, and their friends found them and a battle ensued: even though Fiedra used Hold Person on Lord Callister he kept commanding the devils to do his bidding, so Crokas killed him with lightning. The Lord of the Hells himself, from a rift to his plane, used his bond with Timothy to move him towards the barrier in order to enter the world once more using him; however, Fiedra hid the child with Invisibility, and after figuring out that her magic key had soul energy inside it, released it into Timothy, making both him and the vestige unusable for Asmodeus.[5]

After the Divergence and the departure of the gods behind the Divine Gate, Fiedra adopted Timothy and he stayed with her, living for a time in Torm's Hill (and officially joining the Roach Gang at 12), and moving to Stilben with his adoptive mother two or three years later.[6] Although the Callister boy was no longer connected to the Father of Lies, he was aware of that past bond, and used it to intimidate others even years after regaining his soul.[7]
