Briyakar Jurrell, better known as just Jurrell, was an elf member of the Claret Orders that later became one of The Tombtakers.

Description[]

Appearance[]

Jurrell was an elven woman with brown skin covered in piercings. As of 831 PD her head was shaved, and she had runics tattoos.[1][2] Her teeth were filed to points and she had an immense jewel pierced into her navel.[3]

Personality[]

She had a refined behavior acquired in proper cities, around proper folk. She used to brag about her talent stealing.[4] She was ambitious.[5]

Biography[]

Jurrell was born in Yardel, in a community of elven jewelers that soon became impoverished. She and her family moved to Nogvurot seeking a better life.[6] She maintained an interest in jewelry, and at some point began to steal it, increasing her mastery of the activity to the point where she infiltrated Rexxentrum as a handmaiden of Queen Duvia Dwendal, stealing an immense royal jewel from her, and becoming wanted by imperial decree.[7]

At some point before 829 PD she and Tyffial Wase (another elf from Nogvurot who would eventually become her lover) got involved with the Righteous Brand but later left and joined the Claret Orders,[8] training in the Oltu Ruins for some time and learning the secrets of hemocraft; both elves became close with Zoran Kluthidol, and they were not happy with how the order worked.[9] Eventually they left, and by 831 PD they lived in Shadycreek Run, in a house that had belonged to Auntie Mama until she was executed by the Jagentoths, and where the three of them were found by other former members of the Order, Lucien Tavelle, Cree Deeproots, Otis Brunkel and Brevyn Oakbender (the legal heir of the house).[10] The entire group recovered Auntie Mama's remains from where the Jagentoths kept those who betrayed them,[11] becoming the Tombtakers,[12] and although they lived for a while in Brevyn's house,[13] with Jurrell and Otis overseeing a tense property exchange just outside the gates of the town,[14] eventually the Jagentoth family tried to attack them, stopping only because Vess DeRogna appeared and bargained for their lives, so she could hire the Tombtakers herself.[15] One of their missions was in Molaesmyr, were they fought hags and reached the tower of Caes Mosor.[16][17]

The Tombtakers eventually accompanied the archmage in an expedition to Aeor, but the mission ended in tragedy when Brevyn died recovering a journal for Lucien.[18][19] The group, after the archmage's payment (which would end up disappearing), traveled to Yardel, Jurrell's hometown, and in that time Lucien, who had been reading the journal, gained new knowledge and power from the Somnovem.[20][21] That knowledge was shared with his friends and they decided to use that power to shape the world according to their wishes and make it a better place for them; Jurrell wanted to make her body a living jewel and to make Yardel prosperous so that no one there would go hungry again.[22]

In 833 PD the Tombtakers reached out to Vess DeRogna,[23] and she came to oversee and perform a ritual that would allow Lucien to reach the Somnovem.[24] However, the archmage sabotaged the ritual and killed Lucien.[25][26][27] The group waited until dawn, and their leader had told them that if anything were to go wrong, they had to get rid of any sign, any trace, so, not far from their hideout, they buried him and went their separate ways, to different points of the Dwendalian Empire.[28] Jurrell was arrested and executed at some point before PD 835,[29][30] and Tyffial inherited her stolen royal jewel.[31]

In 836 PD, when a resurrected Lucien wanted to sell Jurrell's jewel Tyffial refused, and only let her beloved's memory go after the Nonagon forced her to do it with his powers.[32]

Relationships[]

Tyffial Wase[]

Both had great love for each other, and were often seen holding hands, or sharing affectionate gestures, although they would sometimes feign innocence or modesty in front of their friends after spending some time alone together.

Appearances and mentions[]

Quotations[]

  • Jurrell: (when asked how would she reshape the world) "I want my whole body to be made of diamonds. And I'll go back to Yardel, make the fields there blossom until they burst. Nobody there will ever starve again."[33]

Trivia[]

  • She didn't seem to like her first name.[34]
  • In Matthew Mercer's notes her name appeared as Jurrel.
  • She knew how to cook a flavorless but hearty porridge.[35]
  • The first time she attempted to draw her own blood for use in magic she nearly bled to death.[36]
    • She's the only member of the Tombtakers whose discipline of hemocraft isn't confirmed.
