Brass dragons are talkative true dragons who dwell in hot, dry climes like deserts.[2]

Aside from the distinctive color of its scales (developing from a dull brown to a more burnished metallic sheen with age), a brass dragon is recognized by its broad protective skullplate, its neck frill, and its wings that taper down to its tail. The frill and wings are mottled green, growing darker with age.[2][6]

The following is taken from the Monster Manual, 5th Edition,[1] but some of the abilities have been demonstrated onstream.

  • Fire Breath: Exhales fire in a long line, requiring a Dexterity saving throw to take half damage.
  • Sleep Breath: Exhales a cone of sleep gas, requiring a Constitution saving throw to avoid falling unconscious for 10 minutes (or until awakened).
  • (Adult and older) Frightful Presence: Each creature of the dragon's choice must succeed at a Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute, or until they succeed at the saving throw at the end of their turn.
  • (Ancient only) Change Shape: Polymorph into a humanoid or beast with a Challenge Rating no higher than the dragon's, or back into its true form.[7] Any equipment it is carrying can be absorbed or carried/worn by the new form or absorbed. The new form still has the dragon's lair actions (see below), personality, mental ability scores, hit points, and ability to speak, but otherwise gains the abilities and features of the new form.
  • Lair actions:
    • A strong wind extinguishes flames, disperses gases and vapors, and forces each nearby creature to succeed at a Strength saving throw or be pushed away from the dragon and knocked prone.
    • A sand cloud blinds creatures who fail a Constitution saving throw.

Main article: J'mon Sa Ord

J'mon Sa Ord, also known as Devo'ssa in their true, ancient brass dragon form, has been the emperor and guardian of Ank'Harel since its founding. Devo'ssa defeated Thordak in centuries past, was briefly summoned by Vox Machina to battle Raishan, and later assisted them in reaching Vecna's reanimated earth titan.

Brass dragons, being desert creatures, often compete for territory with blue dragons.[8] One blue dragon, Brimscythe, kept a bust of J'mon Sa Ord in his home.[9]
