Bormodos (pronounced /ˌbɔrˈmoʊdoʊz/) are one of the sentient species who inhabit the red moon Ruidus, known for their symbiotic relationship with cytaa. They have been told they do not themselves dream, but share the dreams of various Exandrians, whom they call "Dreamers".[3]
Description[]
Bormodos are short, squat humanoids,[4] no more than four feet tall.[5] Their faces are rotund and cherub-like, and they have black eyes with little visible sclera, an elephantine flesh nub with thin slitted nostrils for a nose, and deeply-set mouths.[6] They have two pairs of arms: one is strong with meaty hands and fingers, and the other is thinner and more delicate.[7]
The workers and farmers in the village of Razora were heavily swathed in hooded shawls and tattered robes made of a stiff, heavy material that is mostly unaffected by wind.[8]
History[]
According to their own mythology, bormodos, like the reilorans, were carved from the rock and given form by The One Who Sleeps.[9] They established a symbiotic relationship with another sentient race, the cytaa, keeping them warm and fed in exchange for their hygiene and watch services; traditionally the bormodo-cytaa pair bond when they are young, but if the cytaa were to die, for example, the bormodo would get a new one to take care of.[10]
The Imperium influences the culture of the bormodos and make them participate in various rites, which include their dream connection with the Exandrians (through which they can contemplate the planet and learn common). This political faction currently controls bormodo settlements,[11] demanding from them resources such as food, materials, and trained animals. Some of these towns, such as Razora, aren't entirely comfortable with the presence of people sent by the Imperium, and fear the consequences of being deemed disloyal in their eyes, as shown in 843 PD when Bells Hells visited Razora and were found by Dono, a local who feared they were agents trying to test his loyalty.[12]
At one time, the bormodo had written records of their creation myths and history, but some time ago those records were destroyed by the Imperium.[13] Elder Barthie recalled that until recently, the outlying villages believed that Exandria was the place one went upon death.[14]
Trivia[]
- When they blush they turn purple.[15]
- Their second pair of arms seems to be the more expressive one when they interact with other people.[16]
- They are viviparous, and their method of conception is not very different from that of an average Exandrian humanoid.[17]
- Knowing that higher ranking reilorans have disdain for verbal speech,[18] it is possible that telepathy and its use denotes social status, thus making any non-telepathic race (such as the bormodo) "lesser" in the eyes of the Imperium, which would explain why they are not treated with the same dignity as the reilora.
- Evoroa, brought by Bells Hells, was the first or one of the first bormodos to visit Exandria.[19]
