The Battle of Ghor Dranas, the capital of the Betrayer Gods, was fought in the final days of the Calamity.

History[]

In the Battle of the Barbed Fields, the devotees of the Prime Deities, mortal and angel alike, defeated the garrison at the Betrayers' Rise, which had protected Ghor Dranas, and captured the fortress. That allowed them to advance toward the walls of Ghor Dranas.[2] The forces loosed in that battle scarred the whole valley between the Betrayers' Rise and Ghor Dranas with heavy impacts[3] and flash erosion, creating the wasteland that would be called the Barbed Fields.[4][5]

In the battle for Ghor Dranas itself, the earth opened up and swallowed the Betrayer Gods' legions, the city's crooked towers were toppled, and the central citadel of Virkwzual was broken. Much of the city was reduced to dust and ash.[6] Indeed, the whole dark kingdom was reduced to ash.[7] Asmodeus, the Devil Lord, and Tiamat, the Scaled Tyrant, were the last deities defending their seat of power, and they were both defeated and banished to the Nine Hells.[8]

Duana, High Priest of the Dawnfather, fell in the Battle of Ghor Dranas; she is said to have been wearing the Plate of the Dawnmartyr at the time.[1]

Consequences[]

Ruins of Ghor Dranas[]

The ruins of the Betrayer Gods' citadel at Ghor Dranas were eventually reclaimed by drow rising from deep beneath the surface. Led by Leylas Kryn and worshiping the Luxon, the nascent Kryn Dynasty built the city of Rosohna on the remains of the ancient stronghold and spent centuries reclaiming the ruins. The Ghostlands outside the city, with razed barracks and other structures once protected by the obsidian walls of Ghor Dranas, remained haunted as of 836 PD.[9]

Within Rosohna, rifts to other planes were sealed, but remained vulnerable to being reopened by powerful mages.[10]

Entombed heroes and remaining artifacts[]

The Plate of the Dawnmartyr was eventually worn by members of the Sutan bloodline, and one of them lost the artifact to a fire giant in a card game.[11] In 811 PD, Vox Machina ventured into the City of Brass in the Elemental Plane of Fire and found the fire giant who held the plate, Juuraiel. Juuraiel offered to give them the plate if they assassinated the Nine Hells' ambassador in the city, and after they did so, she was true to her word; Pike Trickfoot donned the armor.[12]

A heroic group of champions who sacrificed themselves in the final battles of the Calamity was entombed, along with their arms and instruments, in the Flotket Alps, in the hidden lair of the androsphinx Yondis the Winter Star.[13]

Trivia[]

  • Great numbers of dranassar lived in Ghor Dranas before it became the seat of the Betrayer Gods' power on Exandria; the Strife Emperor is said to have twisted them into the goblinkin to serve as his soldiers.[14]
  • When the battle was over and Ghor Dranas had fallen, a copper dragon flew across the sea despite their injuries to bring the news to Vasselheim.[15]
