Barlguras are large ape-like demons from the Abyss.

Appearance[]

Barlguras are traditionally large, gorilla-like demons with horns, tusks, and red, burning-coal-like eyes.[1] It is possible, however, to summon less fiendish barlguras with more fey-like features: green and black coloration, and without the jagged elements.[2]

Abilities[]

  • Resistances and immunities:
    • Damage Resistance[3]: Cold, Fire, Lightning
    • Damage Immunities[4]: Poison
    • Condition Immunities: Poisoned
  • Innate Spellcasting:
    • 1/day: Entangle, Phantasmal Force
    • 2/day: Disguise Self, Invisibility (self only)
  • Reckless Attack[5]
  • Running Leap[6]: The barlgura's long jump is up to 40 feet and its high jump is up to 20 feet when it has a running start.

Known barlguras[]

As part of the climactic Battle of the Barbed Fields, devotees of the Prime Deities had to break through the garrison at the Betrayers' Rise.[7] The hero Alyxian and a company of soldiers fought through many demons of the Crawling King's horde, and among the corpses of that company and many demons, Alyxian struggled alone against a "gorilla-like demon".[8] Two known types of demons are compared to gorillas: barlguras[9] and udaaks.[10]

Fjord summoning a Barlgura

Fjord summoned barlguras several times:

  • During the fight against Avantika and her crew.[11]
  • During the Muck Men ambush when the Mighty Nein first arrived in Xhorhas.[12]
  • To distract the chasing gloomstalkers from following them.[13]
  • During the fight against Obann in the dungeon of the Crawling King.[14]
  • Fjord summoned a more fey-looking barlgura during the fight against the The Laughing Hand, reflecting a difference between his old pact with Uk'otoa and his new covenant with Melora.[2]

As of about 836 PD, invisible barlguras may ambush those who venture into the Betrayers' Rise.[15]

Prism Grimpoppy summoned a barlgura to counteract the Dawnborn Angel that joined the battle in the Dawnfather's Temple in Hearthdell.[16]
