The Bari Mondolo, also called "The Smelly One" by the local dolabos, is an eyeless, hulking, multi-legged serpent- or lizard-like creature that can change its skin color and texture to match its surroundings. It has a pointed snout with what appears to be a pinkish-red five-pointed star of skin at its end, and a massive jaw bearing multiple long teeth. When it first appeared, it was the color of the volcanic rock it stood on, but as it scented prey, that color faded to pale white with faint deep burgundy stripes curling under its throat.[1]

Bells Hells encountered the Bari Mondolo on the island of Slival, when the dolabos suggested lighting a large fire to call Toriz, the Protector. The creature severely wounded both Chetney and Orym before being frightened by the arrival of Toriz and then tossed into the ocean by the creature.[2]
Jirana told the party that the creature was a child of the reef serpent Esquala, the protector of the Utu Reef far to the north. It travels from island to island, laying its eggs on different islands through its lifetime.[3] She described it as "still a teenager".[4]
