Barbed devils are lesser devils found in the Nine Hells.
Description[]
Typical barbed devils are like long-limbed, gangly humanoids in shape, about a foot taller than a typical half-elf or human. They have dull green skin and thin, jagged spines extending from the back, shoulders, arms, and the back of the head. They have crooked, overlapping teeth that gnash when they talk, and a long, jagged chin.[3] They have long, knifelike ears. One barbed devil of rank was relatively small and thicker than usual; he wore a sash.[4]

History[]
The Calamity[]
At the beginning of the Calamity, the Lord of the Hells created the Mace of the Black Crown, one of the Arms of the Betrayers.[5] This weapon, in its Exalted State, can summon a barbed devil once per day.[6]
Campaign One: Vox Machina[]
When Percival de Rolo researched devils to prepare Vox Machina for a mission to the Nine Hells to slay Hotis permanently, he learned about barbed devils, among others, and their place in the infernal hierarchy.[7][8]
When Vox Machina went on that mission to the City of Dis, they encountered a barbed devil merchant selling geode-like crystals of condensed soul energy. Keyleth made herself appear to be an erinyes to intimidate this merchant into telling her what little he knew about Mentiri, the prison beneath the City of Dis; he was terrified of what seemed like an imminent, unearned demotion. However, by the end of their interaction, this "erinyes" had seemed to strike a deal with him, and he was pleased to have formed a bond subordinate to her.[9]
After Vox Machina allowed themselves to be arrested so that they could infiltrate Mentiri, a barbed devil participated in the plot (arranged by Ipkesh) to help Vox Machina escape, starting by interrupting a chain devil who had been relieving Vox Machina of their equipment.[10] During the escape, the party (in the form of bats) encountered another chain devil accompanied by barbed devils; the barbed devils didn't notice the bats, but the chain devil did, and the bats fled past some bars to escape.[11]
