Baernie[4] is a half-elf herbalist and druid of the Air Ashari in Zephrah. As an NPC, Baernie is played by Matthew Mercer.

Description[]

Appearance[]

Baernie is a half-elven woman with vibrant brown eyes and blonde hair (like her sisters Leeta and Maeve) that she wears in a pixie cut.[5]

Personality[]

Biography[]

Baernie was born at some point before 813 PD as the daughter of Derrig and Nel. She was one of triplets, having two sisters, Leeta and Maeve, and a younger brother called Will.[6][7] She eventually became a druid, although she focused on more areas of training, including the herbalist profession.[8][9]

Circa 837 PD[10] Baernie lost her father and her brother during an attack on Keyleth in Zephrah, since both were part of Keyleth's defense team as the Master of Defense and a member of the Tempest Blades respectively.[11][12]

As of 843 PD Baernie was part of the forces of Zephrah that were sent to the Tishtan excavation site in Marquet[13] along with her sister Leeta, who was now the right hand of the Voice of the Tempest.[14][15][16] At the battle there at the beginning of the apogee solstice, known as the Battle of the Red Center, Keyleth was badly wounded, and Baernie and some other Ashari (including Turan, Fira, and an unnamed elven woman) that hadn't been hurt were sent to the Grey Valley to collect the blue perennem flower, a plant that could neutralize the toxin that was weakening Keyleth and three other people; the half-elven druid was the leader of the mission.[17] Since the destination was dangerous and communication magic wasn't working well, Bells Hells were also sent to the Grey Valley to look for the Ashari and the flower. There, they had to fight a devourer-like demon that had killed three members of Baernie's team, which made Orym fear for his sister-in-law's well-being.[18]

They eventually found the remaining Air Ashari (Baernie, Jennis and Erana) trapped in cages in the Iridon Bastion: they had traveled there thinking it would be a safe place, only to discover the aftermath of a demon incursion, being trapped by the fiendish forces to be used (as nourishment and/or sacrifice) during their victory celebration.[19] However, the demons were defeated by Bells Hells and Teven Klask, and Baernie was reunited with her brother-in-law, explaining to him and his friends what had happened. Since none of them had the resources to teleport back to Zephrah, they decided to spend the night in the valley, and the half-elf cast Stone Shape to create a small refuge for her and her allies.[20]

The following morning Baernie opened her improvised cavern again and she and Orym talked about visiting Derrig and Will with the rest of the family. The group Teleported to Zephrah. Baernie was greeted by Leeta and later by their mother. After Keyleth's wounds were healed, she went to the balcony to speak to her people and commend the bravery and effort of the team sent to the Grey Valley, including both Baernie and Orym.[21] While Leeta and Maeve were away on a mission, many days later, Baernie stayed to protect Zephrah and to keep both Nel and Alma (Orym's mother) safe.[22]

Trivia[]

  • Her name could come from the Ancient Greek Bereníkē, meaning "bringer of victory". Alternatively, it could come from the Old English bearn (child), or from the Old Norse birna (bear).
  • For a time it was believed that Baernie was a full-time druid, given that Liam mixed her name with Maeve's,[25] and the fact that the latter had helped Orym learn about plant-based healing,[26] suggesting she worked with her mother as an herbalist. However, after knowing Maeve is a more powerful druid than Baernie, and that Leeta (the third triplet) is more martial-focused, that leaves Baernie as the sibling who followed her mother's steps.
