Lieutenant Azune Nayar (pronounced Ah-ZOO-nay) is a paladin/sorcerer played by Luis Carazo in Campaign Four.
Description[]
Appearance[]
Official art of Azune Nayar, by Loren Hontanilla.[art 2]
Azune is human in appearance.[3] Although his eyes look purple from a distance, they actually have three colors: the lower part of each iris is blue, while the upper part has the reddish tone of a sunset, and the pupils are yellow.[14] He is just over 5'10" tall but projects the image of being taller by his proud bearing. His body is strong, lean, and muscular, with medium brown skin and auburn hair tied back in a braid. His hair can go past his mid back when out of the braid.[15] He has a birthmark on the left side of his neck and face.[16][17]
His arm has a tattoo reading, "Have mercy on those I send you".[18]
Personality[]
Azune stands tall and proud.[16] He has an emotional side, especially when remembering old friends and witnessing significant moments.[19] He values memories and past events a lot, and struggles differentiating between letting go and forgetting, preferring to suffer if that suffering honors a specific memory.[20]
Luis Carazo described Azune as: "Azune is like clay. The people around him and the world around him are going to shape who he becomes. He's not very well-read, but he has had to learn how to read people as a part of his survival. As he goes on his Arcane Marshal's patrol, he finds in the little gestures and the little exchanges that happen among the everyday people, a reason to fight on their behalf. Azune admired Thjazi, looked up to him tremendously. He was a father figure of sorts throughout the Falconer's Rebellion and there's a part of Azune that believes that he owed that man so much."[21]
Biography[]
Background[]
Fan art of young Azune in battle, by Meghan Pagliaroni.[art 3]
At some point in his youth his father passed him off to mercenaries.[7] Azune followed Thjazi Fang into battle when he was 15.[22] Eventually, Azune became an Arcane Marshal of the Revolutionary Guard.[2] He and Teor Pridesire had served together for years as well.[23]
"The Fall of Thjazi Fang" (4x01)[]
Azune joined in a failed plot to help Thjazi escape execution. His part in the plot was to confirm the presence of a magical device on the prisoner's back while he inspected him with Detect Magic (using its ritual as an excuse to let his friend know about that item with Message); the device was supposed to be a helpful glyph that would teleport Thjazi outside the walls of the city, but that didn't happen, and he was hanged.

Later that day he and two of his Enquirers brought the body to the Rookery to leave it with the Fang family, and Azune stayed to attend the Farramn ceremony; while he was there he kept following Halandil with his eyes, looking for a chance to speak with him. As more people started to arrive Azune recognized Teor, and met with Occtis Tachonis too, asking him about what had gone wrong with the plan to rescue Thjazi.
The three of them ended up leaving to check Thjazi's flop house, and there they discovered a dying Thimble with the magical glyph Azune thought he had detected on Thjazi. Teor healed the pixie, and they had to explain to her that it was too late to help Thjazi now. Azune tried to comfort her by saying Thjazi had said she had done well, but Thimble got angry, and explained how she had been ambushed before she could deliver the glyph; that made them realize that someone knew about their plan and had disturbed it, and that person had left a fake clue that deceived Azune's Detect Magic before the hanging. They were joined by Kattigan Vale shortly after and he helped them find clues, including some signs that pointed to the Crow Keepers as the responsible for the attack against Thimble; they also discovered that they had taken a treasure she and Thjazi had stolen two months ago, so Thimble drew it and told the others what she knew about it. She then told them that she wanted to see Thjazi's body, and Azune took her drawing with him when they left.[24]
"Broken Wing" (4x02)[]
Azune and the others returned to Thjazi's funeral at the very end of it, hearing the melody of Broken Wing in the distance as Hal and his youngest daughter, Hero, played to honor the dead. When they arrived and Thimble had a moment to mourn Thjazi, Thaisha silently asked Azune if they knew what had happened; he approached the body, and before inspecting it he apologized to Thimble, admitting that in his own last conversation with Thjazi he didn't tell her anything about her, but Azune had wanted to make her feel better back at the flop house, and she told him it was ok. In Thjazi's clothes Azune found the item he had Detected before the execution, and Occtis let him know that it had been enchanted with potent illusory properties to fool his Detect Magic, assuring the Arcane Marshal that he had done his own part well. After that they spoke for a bit about potential traitors within their plan, and about their plans for the next day; Azune told them he could check with the marshals to see what he could find out. After that he spent some time speaking with Loza Blade, who told him about her plans of retirement in her family farm in Dol-Rungja.
Azune returned to the Brethren Hall, and next morning, while still remembering Thjazi's death, he visited the office of his captain, Edrian Fazir, finding him on a meeting with Sir Harondus Einfasen; the nobleman greeted Azune and they had a short chat about him being with Thjazi before his death, and how he had been a complicated figure. Then, he explained how the resources dedicated to the security of Dol-Makjar were being re-distributed, so that divisions such as the Arcane Marshals would receive more funding; when Azune asked what would happen with the other divisions, Einfasen explained that the Revolutionary Guard and the Gate Guard would be replaced by soldiers provided by the different Sundered Houses, with Sir Harondus himself as a security overseer. Azune maintained cordiality, but he deduced from that interaction that the nobleman, while not malevolent, was power-hungry and felt like he deserved to be in charge of stuff. After Sir Harondus left, Edrian said that at least their own division would get bonuses, but Azune bitterly replied it would only be while they were useful and Einfasen soldiers were unable to replicate their own magical skills. Edrian then mentioned that the Sundered Houses were making more moves, and that they intended to visit the Penteveral that same day. Shortly after, Azune changed the schedule so that it was her turn to patrol the Crow Keepers' territory.
"The Snipping of Shears" (4x03)[]
Azune was patrolling with Horace when he saw Murray angrily walking nearby, so he stopped her and the two of them started speaking in an alleyway through the Message cantrip. She told him about what was happening in the Penteveral, and he updated her about the situation in the Brethren Hall, which led to a small argument: he refused to believe that he would stop being useful to the city, since he would fight for a place in it, but the dwarf insisted that the houses would train replacements for him in her school, and the more effort Azune made the more he would be following their designs. Murray was exhausted and sleep-deprived, but mentioned that House Tachonis was looking for Occtis, so they left to find him first (after Azune let Horace know he had something to do).
After visiting the Guard Tower and discovering the aftermath of a fight there, they went to Hal's house, finding the host there with Thimble and Kattigan, who explained that they had discovered Casimir was the traitor, and that he had left the city chasing Cyd, who had stolen from him. They were joined shortly after by Teor, who had been saved by Tyranny and Wicander Halovar after the latter's family tried to get rid of the nama warrior. Azune, realizing that the houses were getting more daring after Thjazi's death, and how several of the people there had been making enemies in the last hours, told them that he could get them horses to leave Dol-Makjar; when he hesitated about the possibility of leaving with them, Thimble encouraged him to catch their enemies within the city, and Kattigan teased him about how much he had grown (causing the Arcane Marshal to feel proud of himself for a moment). He went with them to the Falcon's Rest, and after getting steeds for them and watching them go he stayed near the monument, reciting the names of those who fell in the Falconer's Rebellion.
"Stone-Faced" (4x04)[]
Azune recited the names, including those that hadn't been written in the monument, and stopping after Thjazi's; he then stayed silent for a moment, conflicted, before whispering the names of the five people that left, wondering if they would forget about him. He returned to the Rookery, finding a surprisingly revitalized Murray (which caused the paladin to wonder what she drank), and she convinced him and Hal to join them on a new mission. They stopped at the Archanade first to speak with Bolaire Lathalia, and although Azune was confused about it, he trusted Halandil when he told him to be on guard, and kept his warhammer ready. The curator, somewhat angry because Thimble had left Dol-Makjar, brought them to his secret archive (which made Azune feel uncomfortable), and from there to his private vault; there Murray was so excited she tried to shake a giant's severed hand to see if she could speak to it, and Azune noted that even if it worked, the giant might not want to speak with her. In the conversation that followed (about how Thjazi didn't trust Bolaire and warned Murray about him) the curator revealed (at Hal's insistence) that he was actually just his mask: a sentient artifact crafted as part of the plan to kill Rauwyn the Trickster, and able to possess bodies to move. Azune was fascinated by the mask, and when Murray wondered if Thjazi hated him, Azune theorized that he probably found him useful as a tool (something Bolaire himself confirmed); while he examined the mask the Arcane Marshal noticed a small imperfection and cast Mending on it, but before the cantrip took effect Bolaire had to leave to meet some visitors, and when he returned he was in a hurry, telling the group something was going on at the Palazzo Davinos (Azune cast False Life on himself, seeing that Hal was also preparing).
When they reached the castle Azune had his Detect Magic ready and was tense, seeing that everything was dark but surprisingly clean and undisturbed; he walked with Bolaire when he approached to pick a melted candle, and after a brief debate about its necromantic purposes, they asked the paladin to Mend it. Azune, after getting closer to Hal as a precaution, did that, and the moment the candle was reconstituted, the bard heard something and the others followed him out. They reached the Lloy estate, finding there Sir Julien Davinos, Lady Aranessa Royce, Vaelus, Thaisha, and the dead body of Occtis. As the word "remember" reverberated in Azune's mind, he witnessed a miracle: combining Bolaire's tools with Murray's Mage Hand and Portent, and supported by Hal's Bardic Inspiration and Thaisha's Guidance, they successfully removed the Stone of Nightsong from inside Occtis, and he started breathing again as the ground shook and his body started repairing itself. Everyone was happy, and although Sir Julien was furious about the connection between the young man and House Tachonis (responsible for the massacre in the Palazzo), Lady Aranessa calmed him down, and reminded the group that they still had fights ahead.
"Branching Paths" (4x05)[]
Fan art of Azune's conversation with Julien, by Hugo Cardenas.[art 5]
Azune convinced Julien to walk outside the estate so that they could make sure they hadn't been followed, and to give the knight a chance to calm down; there, he told him that while he admired his forthrightness about Occtis and his family, he was also being reckless, and that at that moment, instead of antagonizing everyone, he should make the active choice of trusting the rest of the group, letting them earn that trust in time. As a gesture, Azune revealed that he had known Sir Julien for a long time, since he was at Thjazi's side at the end of the Falconer's Rebellion, but during that encounter the knight hadn't looked at him even once, being too focused on Thjazi. Because of it, Azune expressed his willingness to speak in favor of Julien if he ever decided to speak about the past; however, the latter bitterly answered that the Arcane Marshal was probably glad to see him and his family so low, and when Azune tried to explain that wasn't the case, Julien waked back inside, and the paladin followed, still uncertain about having been followed there. In the period before dawn, the group discussed Occtis's status and the implications for House Tachonis, as well as the repercussions for other political forces in the city; they gradually defined a plan, with the newly resurrected necromancer leaving Dol-Makjar with an escort to seek answers about his post-mortem visions, while the rest stayed behind to sound out the Sundered Houses and look for ways to weaken them (with Azune pointing out that historically the houses hadn't worked together, and they could widen the fractures between them). At the end of that conversation Azune formally introduced himself to Julien, who didn't know his name, but when he asked for his, the knight replied that they would see who he was when he returned to Dol-Makjar.
After the Seekers left, Bolaire, Murray, Azune, and Hal started preparing for their respective jobs, and agreeing that they should find a place to meet as often as possible, preferably without connections to any of them; the warlock told them about the place where he and Halandil drank together. They spoke for a little bit longer, and Bolaire admitted he let Vaelus into the city so that she made some trouble for Thjazi, but then assured Azune that he had nothing to do with his execution. After that, the Arcane Marshal returned to the Brethren Hall, finding people there talking about the mysterious darkness around the Palazzo Davinos the previous night, and how the people there had apparently left without letting anyone know.
Relationships[]
Julien Davinos[]
Azune met Sir Julien for the first time when he was young, at the end of the Falconer's Rebellion, and never forgot the encounter.[25] Despite the conflicted past between them, Azune told Julien he admired his capacity to find words for what he was feeling.[26] He offered to support whatever story Julien wanted to tell about how his capture of Thjazi Fang actually occurred. However, perhaps because Julien didn't trust Azune yet, he assumed his gesture of good will hid resentment towards him and his people.[27]
Murray Mag'Nesson[]
Azune considers Murray a true friend, although they still argue about the ways to approach a problem.[28]

- Brennan: You don't know the difference between letting go and forgetting.

Trivia[]
- Azune shares his name with an NPC Luis Carazo presented in the small town of Alma, his campaign setting for Tales Unrolled;[42] Luis declared that he loves the name. Azune's surname could derive from the Arabic nayyir meaning luminous/brilliant/shining.[43]
- Azune's build is inspired by 4th Edition's hybrid of two classes. Luis made his character as a unique combination of sorcerer and paladin instead of simply a multiclass.[44]
- Azune's favorite color is a reddish purple; similar to that of a Ruby Glow passion fruit flower.[45]
- Azune is similar to Zerxus Ilerez, however, Azune is more flexible/changeable than Zerxus, who had a narrower scope of what he thought was possible. As of September 2025, after some episodes had been filmed but before any had aired, Luis already had notes as to how Azune was being changed by other party members.[46]
- Since Azune's main job is to find magic-related anomalies, a routine he has adopted is to ritual cast Detect Magic while he is getting ready for work so, when he leaves his room, the spell is already active.[47]
- During Azune's patrols, he looks for moments between the people that live in the city -- "a moment of kindness, a whisper, a laugh, a joke shared, a soft touch" -- which matter to him more than any arcane signature he detects.[48]
- The members of each of the three parties were loosely decided from the start, but change was possible during Overture. Luis purposely created Azune as someone who would have probably been a better fit in the Soldiers group but was instead forced to be a Schemer.[49]
