An avadon (pronounced /ˈævəˌdɒn/) is a faceless panther-like creature of Ruidus, used as a battle mount by reilora warriors and as a beast of burden and for hunting by the villagers of Razora.
Description[]
Avadons have the muscular body of a hunting feline (such as a panther) but are hairless and covered in scales. They lack a head or neck; instead, they have just a big mouth with sharp teeth,[2] under which they have a pocket-like nose.[3]
History[]
Avadons live on Ruidus and are strong predators. Some Ruidians keep them as beasts of burden or train them for the Dominion of Cruth in villages such as Razora.[4]
When Bells Hells arrived on Ruidus in 843 PD, they were pursued by Ruby Vanguard forces including reilora warriors riding avadons.[5] Later, in Razora, Dono and Barthie told them more about these creatures, including their weaknesses.[6] When they arrived at Kreviris, they faced several reiloran warriors and their avadons, killing all of them.[7]
While Fearne Calloway, Fresh Cut Grass and Ashton Greymoore were walking through Vaterra Kreviris following Ira Wendagoth, they noticed that many beasts were kept there, including some avadons.[8] Later, when they were in the barracks where Sorrowlord Athion Zathuda and Sunder King Ozo Cruth were meeting, the latter was accompanied by two armored avadons; one of the creatures, when they were leaving, noticed the smell of Exandrian meat, and focused on Fearne and FCG, expressing its hunger when they both cast Speak with Animals, and refusing to leave until the cleric Commanded it to do so. The avadon tried to return when the effect of the spell ended, but the Sunder King called, so the monster followed its master.[9]
Abilities[]
According to Dono, loud noises spook avadons, but they have sensitive spots on their shoulders that petting correctly causes them to calm and be ready to eat, which is how the bormodo control them. The reilora are able to control them mentally.[10] They attack using their teeth, claws, and barbed tongues.
Avadons have displayed the following abilities:
- AC: 19 or lower[11]
- Hit points: about 60
- Chewing attack: The avadon can hold another creature in its mouth, and while there the creature takes ~22 points of piercing damage each turn and is restrained.[12]
- Pounce: The avadon moves at least 20 ft. straight toward a creature then attacks. If the target fails a Strength saving throw of DC 15 or higher[13], the target is grappled and the avadon can make an additional claw attack against it as a bonus action.[14]
- Multiattack: The avadon can use its Pounce ability, then make two attacks, one with its barbed tongue and one with its claws.[15]
- Barbed tongue attack: +3 to hit, about 9 points of piercing damage[16]
- Claw attack: about 14-16 points of slashing damage
Trivia[]
- Their howling is similar to that of wolves.[17]
