King Augustus Valian, known simply as Gus by his former war comrades, is the ruler of the Kingdom of Timmony.

Description[]

Personality[]

Despite his position as monarch, Augustus remembers his origins and shows a certain level of gratitude and closeness to those who fought alongside him. He is known to favor the commonfolk.[3]

Biography[]

Background[]

Augustus was born in the nation of Argosia, in the region that would later become his kingdom. During the War of Axe and Vine, Timmony used the conflicts to become independent, and Augustus fought for this cause, alongside many other soldiers. He gained so much support and that after defeating Argosia, he was declared the king of their new country; around the year 45, during his ascension to the throne (made official with the support of druids), he declared that anyone who had fought by his side would retain the right of call him by his nickname, "Gus", for as long as they lived.[4] He also knighted many people and allowed them to pass the title on to their children.[5]

In the following years King Gus brought the druidic Circle of the Stag to his court as advisors,[6] and with their help, turned the dogs of Timmony into a national sign of cultural identity, as well as a useful resource: the animals acted as messengers and fulfilled missions for people across the country. The king himself put three red dogs in his coat of arms (honoring his father and brothers);[7] moreover, he had a team of dogs (including Rock's mastiffs) as his personal agents, his "hounds" on the field.[8]

During the Falconer's Rebellion some people from Timmony chose to side with the rebels, and although this kingdom didn't openly favor a side, King Gus allegedly sent support to rebels in Argosia.[9] He was also inspired by some of the rebels, who shared his appreciation for the commonfolk, which motivated his desire of establishing Alcalds as heralds of the people, able to communicate their worries directly to him.[10]

Campaign Four[]

By the year 71 after the Shapers' War King Augustus still had the support of many who either fought with him in the war or were connected to those veterans; these loyalists were at odds with some followers of the Candescent Creed who considered the monarch a tyrant for putting himself "above" the Light of their religion,[11] and were encouraged by nobles who opposed Augustus's measures favoring the peasants over them.[10]

A few days after Thjazi Fang's execution in Dol-Makjar, the King of Timmony traveled to that city[12] for a meeting with the Revolutionary Council.[13]

Appearances and mentions[]

Quotations[]

  • (to a druid, during his oath as the new king of Timmony) "Any who fought with me may call me Gus for as long as they live."[14]

Trivia[]

  • His name means "majestic" or "venerable" in Latin.[15] His surname could be a modification of the adjective "valiant", and/or derive from the Latin valeō, which can be translated as "to rule" or "to be worthy", among others.[16]
  • He is the first, and so far only king of Timmony.
