Auggie James is a young newsie and street kid recruited into Candela Obscura. He is played by Ashley Johnson.
Description[]
Appearance[]
Auggie is 19 years old, and wears cast-off clothing that doesn't really fit. His hair is mussed and his freckled face is dirty.[1]
Personality[]
Auggie was described as "scrappy".[2] He seems curious and eager to learn, as well as friendly and feisty.
Biography[]
Background[]
Auggie was an orphan dropped off in infancy at Saint Mannigan's Lodging House for Children. He spent his entire life both there and on the streets, surviving on odd jobs.[3] Charlotte Eaves frequently gave him shelter and odd jobs at her bar The Sight Unseen and felt protective toward him.
"Candela Obscura: The Cold Embrace" (CO1x01)[]
On a stormy night in Newfaire, Auggie James delivered a newspaper to Donald Kinzel, a retired foreman and friend, but when Donald threw another chunk of odd-looking charcoal on the fire, it exploded in blue fire and seemed to push their spirits outside their bodies. Ice froze the room instantly and as Auggie lost consciousness, he saw a shadow escape the twisted remains of the furnace. When he came to, he was surrounded by six Periphery officers with the Office of Unexplained Phenomenon and sent on his way with no explanation. On his way to the Sight Unseen, Alexandra Elise O'Neill stepped out of an alley and asked him for a conversation. She told him what he saw was not normal and invited him to meet a few of her friends. If he liked them, he could help them investigate. Auggie agreed, and was introduced to the rest of the Circle. He hesitantly agreed to join them, and they became the Circle of the Vassal and the Veil within Candela Obscura.
When they investigated the room where Donald died, his ghostly blue glowing figure appeared, confused, cold, and lost, seeking warmth and reaching toward them. He recognized Auggie and told him the fuel was bought from "Layla", so Auggie led them to her, and they then went to a foundry where they encountered and defeated the shadow creature, but Auggie took some bleed damage from it. They went to a Candela Obscura safehouse in a book shop, where the proprietor welcomed them. Lightkeeper Alexandra welcomed the still-hesitant Auggie to Candela Obscura and arranged for him to stay free in the bookshop's spare room.
