Arrows of Slaying are one-use magic ammunition that deal heavy additional damage to specified creatures; for example, Arrows of Dragon Slaying deal extra damage when they hit a dragon.[1]
Description[]
Appearance[]
One Arrow of Dragon Slaying, originally intended for use against Rimefang, had a rough metallic texture along its shaft and was a deep forest green color; it resisted the ice from the white dragon's breath.[3]
Properties[]
Arrows of Slaying are enchanted to expend their magic only when they hit a specified kind of creature, which can be as generic as creature type (e.g. any giant) or more specific (a race like ettins, or even a particular group). If the arrow deals damage to such a creature, the target takes 6d10 additional piercing damage, or half as much with a successful Constitution saving throw.[4] Once the arrow deals the additional damage, it becomes nonmagical.[1]
History[]
Three Arrows of Dragon Slaying were used in Vox Machina's campaign against the Chroma Conclave. Vex'ahlia, in the company of Zahra Hydris, found one of these arrows on the corpse of an adventurer who had been sent by the Slayer's Take to slay Rimefang.[5] About two months later, and only four days after the Chroma Conclave appeared and attacked Emon, Zahra gave Vex a second Arrow of Dragon-Slaying she had forged, and told Vex to use it against the ancient dragons.[6] This arrow Vex used in the unsuccessful ambush of Umbrasyl.[7] Nevertheless, when Vex reconnected with Zahra a week later, she expressed thanks and asked Zahra to craft another one, which Zahra said would take a few weeks.[8] Two weeks later, Vex checked in, and Zahra had enchanted another arrow at great expense, but it was unfinished and of questionable efficacy, so Vex decided to let her finish her work.[9] One week later, as Vex and Zahra infiltrated Emon together to face Thordak, Zahra slipped the finished arrow into Vex's quiver. Vex fired that arrow at Thordak, but missed,[10] and the arrow was lost.[11] Finally, she used the arrow she'd found in Rimefang's lair, and shattered the crystal soul anchor in Thordak's chest, dramatically reducing the dragon's size and elemental power.[12]
