"Arrival at Kreviris" (3x87) is the eighty-seventh episode of the third campaign of Critical Role. Bells Hells reach the city of Kreviris, where they explore the surface details of the Ruidian capital…

Synopsis[]

Announcements[]

Previously on Critical Role[]

So, last we left off: Bells Hells, upon arriving here on the red moon Ruidus, you found a handful of allies and tidbits of information that promised the existence of the Volition, a rebellious troop, a network that's been working against the Kreviris Imperium. You've been seeking out allies, made a few, discovered a few enemies, had a brief run in with Otohan Thull and escaped, before heading into the nearby subterranean regions of the moon. You found within there an odd ancient portal that leads to a portion of Exandria below, and also the lake in which resides some sort of a shadowed entity that tried to drag you to a watery grave. Managing to battle that away and return to the moon after leaving some messages to the Voice of the Tempest, you trudged back to the surface and began to walk on foot after a night's rest through the storms as they come and go, until eventually some of the storm begins to break ahead, and you can see the cleft valley of a mountain range above and ahead of you, where you can see the signs of the capital city, Kreviris.

Part I[]

After a brief glimpse of the city ahead, the storm closes in again. The party feels a rumble beneath their feet, and dashes to a rocky outcropping. From there, they hear faint chirping and see a basketball-sized tadpole creature with faint scales emerge. Imogen Catapults a rock near it, scaring it back underground, and FCG uses his Communicators Gift to cast Speak with Animals, but discovers it is not a beast. Eventually they toss out a dead body part (from those stuffed into the Bag of Holding) and a feeding frenzy ensues from suddenly-appearing dozens of the creatures. Imogen casts Telekinesis on the rock they're on and flies the party safely away.

They continue their trek, but suddenly the ground around them glows in another Ruidian flare. While they move forward, FCG successfully Sends to Ira Wendagoth telling him they're on the moon, but Ira is evasive about his own location and activities, saying he wants to see how interested they are in finding him. FCG admits he is very stressed at this point. Chetney suggests they stop at one of the city's surrounding outposts before heading into the city proper, to learn what they can, but first, Imogen Sends to Zhesh, their contact with the Volition. She tells her they've killed Edmuda and they need to find the Volition, and Zhesh responds that they should find her in the Jagged Edge within the Clutch. They should tell Jidoh that they are of the Vanguard and looking for a contract.

The party resumes their Ruby Vanguard uniforms and heads for the nearest outpost. From its tower, two figures are watching and a third is beelining towards them. Fearne uses Disguise Self to appear to be an Imperium reilora similar to the Willmaster. The approaching figure is a race new to them: humanoid and bipedal, very thin and eight feet tall with gray fur and clawed feet. He carries a crossbow-like weapon bearing a bit of Ruidian glass at the ready, but says nothing. Imogen stands directly behind the disguised Fearne and telepathically contacts the guard, saying they're new recruits and their caravan broke down. The soldier buys this story and admits them, but wants their names and commanding officer for their records. Imogen tells him (speaking telepathically so it appears to come from Fearne) that she is the Willmaster.

Inside the tower, lanterns brighten magically as they follow the guard in and get some water. Through Detect Thoughts, Imogen is able to hear when the guard telepathically communicates with Fearne, and responds as she would. The guard is dubious about the alleged new recruits, but tells her to "take them below", then leaves them alone after sharing that the outpost's name is Tyran A. FCG ritually casts Telepathic Bond on them all, while Orym follows the guard and learns that one of the other outposts has been destroyed by the Volition.

Ashton and Laudna climb the tower, encountering three reiloran guards in a room midway up. Once at the top, one of the guards is the same sasquatch race as the first one they met, and is carrying an Exandrian firearm. While Ashton distracts the guard with an offer to trade information, Laudna sends an invisible Pâté scouting the city, learning there are multiple outposts, each with a giant war horn carved into the mountain below them. The guard's questions are uniformly to do with Exandrian fruit, and Ashton learns little beyond the location of a good bar in the city. The reilora from the middle chamber descend and telepathically ask the disguised Fearne what she needs from them. Imogen haughtily responds she needs nothing. The guards ask her to give their "appreciation" to The Will, the disciplinary arm of the military branch the Dominion of Cruth, and pass on their hope to be relocated.

The group regathers outside, and in their discussion realize the existence of war horns means communication isn't exclusively telepathic. They find a pathway leading directly into the city from the tower and reach it in the late afternoon, encountering a small group of children petting a mole-like creature.

Ryndon - ZioCorvid

The children are a reilora (Asha) and a bormodo (Kelito) who have been washing the ryndons, hog-like burrowing creatures. The party learns they are in The Clutch, a neighborhood of Kreviris, and the children mostly try to stay out of the way of the "newcomers" and be still and quiet in the presence of the Imperium. They're not allowed underground, because they are Clutch folk and not important enough. When the party learns they know of toys only from their dreams, Chetney gives them a small rocking horse, which they name "Borse". When the children's parent sees this, the kids are quickly and nervously called away. They learn the Imperium is putting everything toward "the coming move," and that the Jagged Edge (the shop they are seeking) is at the base of the sculpture of the Vidulch skull.

The party heads that direction until they notice the passers-by start scattering and try to do the same, failing miserably. Two avadons approach, ridden by two reilora. They are escorting a wheeled container pulled by a juggernaut from the direction of the main entrance to the city. Fearne draws the attention of one of the avadons and its mounted reilora who questions her, thinking she is a Ruby Vanguard member. Her answers are unsatisfactory and the interview is going badly so she wildshapes into a fly, trying to escape. The avadon snaps at her, forcing her out of fly form and back into Fearne, inside the avadon's mouth. Roll initiative!

Laudna casts Bane successfully against all but one reilora, then hits the avadon holding Fearne with Eldritch Blast. Orym Hexes and goads the juggernaut while attacking, but it counterattacks hitting three times, twice getting critical hits, for massive damage. FCG immediately Banishes it. Imogen telepathically throws rocks at the reilora while Fearne casts Scorching Ray at the avadon chewing on her and kills it. The other one, however, attacks FCG, seriously wounding and grappling him in its mouth, and causing him to lose concentration on the juggernaut's Banishment. Both reilora go after Fearne. Chetney transforms into wolf form and attacks the juggernaut, while Ashton goes into a Gravity rage and kills one of the reilora.

Laudna casts Blight through the crystal on Ashton's hammer, splitting the spell, killing the other reilora and seriously wounding the avadon. Orym concentrates on the juggernaut, hitting six times with his action surge, but the creature is still alive. Laudna's Silvery Barbs allows Orym's tripping attack to succeed, flooring the juggernaut briefly. It counterattacks and misses, so Orym ripostes, killing it. Only the wounded avadon remains and FCG kills it with Toll the Dead.

They throw the reiloran bodies into the portable hole and the witches clean up the area with Prestidigitation. On inspecting the cart the group was escorting, they find a heavy metal box which Imogen telekinetically moves into the hole before moving the now-empty cart to a rooftop. Orym notices someone watching from a building, and when Pâté scouts it, he finds a rather run-down room with a hiding aged civilian reilora inside. Laudna tells Pâté to intimidate then, which he does. The party resumes their journey toward the Jagged Edge, but when Laudna checks the Treshi scry ball, she gets a ping. Otohan Thull is somewhere within range.

Fresh Cut Grass casts Locate Creature on Jidoh, their contact, and they move through the alleys of the city until they reach what appears to be a blazing kiln with a doughnut-shaped structure around its base, the Jagged Edge. It is a glass workshop and weaponsmith, owned by Jidoh. They do as Zhesh suggested and tell him they are seeking a contract, and he disappears for five minutes before from the back room, a reiloran shrike, Zhesh, appears. She asks their business and Laudna tells her they want to help the resistance. Zhesh suspiciously denies being part of the Volition.

Ashton comes clean: they're Exandrians trying to scout out who is trying to wake Predathos and figure out how to stop it, and Imogen adds they have no problem with Ruidians coming to Exandria but need to stop Ludinus. Zhesh is persuaded, but still denies being part of the Volition; she is simply aligned with their cause. The Volition moves frequently using colors to signal where. She tosses them a deep purple cloth and tells them to seek out a high vantage point to find its match, recommending the Overspoke in the Banners. One of the watchmen there, Earot, can be bribed to take a convenient break. She also explains that the crossbow-like weapons they saw can pull lightning energy from the atmosphere to focus on a target. Chetney buys a glass scythe from Jidoh for 300 gold, but Jidoh then leaves, telling them he never saw them. Zhesh won't sell a glass sculpture of a tiny dancer to Laudna, but gifts it to her before showing them the basement, where they can wait an hour to be closer to dusk when the bribable watchman comes on duty.

The party goes to the cellar where they take a short rest. Imogen re-attunes to the Circlet of the Hidden Eye, while Chetney determines that the box they recovered from the reilorans resembles those they've seen that the Cerberus Assembly was using for shipments in Paragon's Call in Bassuras. The box is held by a magical lock and they decide to wait for morning to try to open it so FCG can use Dispel Magic to increase their odds. Chetney also uses the Monocle of True Essence to determine there were no magical items on the bodies. While they kill time, they chat. FCG's been wondering about FRIDA lately, and they try to figure out why Sending sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. Laudna checks the scry ball and determines Otohan is slightly closer, inside the city but not yet close to them. They talk about potential bribes for the watchman, and FCG ritually re-casts Telepathic Bond on them all. Imogen suggests that the people here would have a better life on Exandria, although Orym thinks the problem is more political than geographic. Chetney and Fearne volunteer to be captured, if the others think it might be useful.

Suddenly, Imogen hears a telepathic voice in her mind telling them to keep quiet, and they hear a half-dozen footsteps above them. Laudna casts Darkness around them as they huddle in silence.

Quotations[]

  • The children: (about the toy horse) Can you make more of these?
Chetney: I can, but it takes time. And the more I make, the less special they are, so take care of this one, because I know when you're sleeping, and I know when you're awake, and if you're good, for goodness sake, I'll bring another one around.[1]

Trivia[]

  • Orym did 87 points of damage against the juggernaut in a single round between his three attacks, his action surge for another three attacks, and a final Riposte as a reaction to the creature's missed attack on him.
  • The title of this episode may be a callback to "Arrival at Kraghammer" (1x01), which aired almost exactly nine years ago from the date this episode did.
  • Sam's jerrycan is adorned with a representation of Ropey (Laudna's animated rope from last episode) complete with huge googly eyes and heavy eyebrows[2].
