Ankhegs are large insectoid creatures that live underground and sometimes in forests. The desert variant of ankhegs, known to exist in Marquet, are called sandkhegs.

Appearance[]

An ankheg is a large, 8–9-foot-long, cockroach-like creature with long antennae. The length of the body consists of segmented armor like plates held together by hard, yellowish muscle sinew. Several legs protrude out of its body; of these their front pair are adapted with sharp hooks for burrowing and for grasping prey. Its head has large, powerful mandibles that can snap a small tree in half, and its throat contains a basketball-sized sac which produces a dark green acid for spitting out at prey. These creatures have light green blood.[1]

The sandkheg desert-dwelling subrace looks similar, but are extremely intelligent and set traps for their prey by creating sand-covered deadfalls into which their prey would sink while the sandkheg remained hidden nearby beneath the surrounding sand.[2] They were also known to lure prey into more favorable killing grounds or to others of their group. The acidic bile used by sandkhegs as a weapon is stored within their body and becomes deadly to themselves as well as to others upon mixing with their saliva. Some of the humanoids residing within the Rumedam Desert at some time gilded sandkheg skulls and created altars in their honor.[3]

Abilities[]

  • Senses: Darkvision, tremorsense
  • Attacks:
    • Bite: The ankheg can make a bite attack that deals slashing damage and additional acid damage.[4]
    • Acid Spray: The ankheg can spit acid in a 30-foot-long, 5-foot-wide line.[5]

Useful components[]

  • The hard, yellowish muscle sinew and tendons under its segmented chitinous armor could be used to make strong cord.[6]
  • Basketball-sized, acid-producing sacs.[7]
  • The bile of the desert-based variant of ankhegs is used to create the extremely strong alcoholic beverage, Sandkheg's Hide.

History[]

Campaign One: Vox Machina[]

Vox Machina fought an ankheg colony in the Herethis platinum mines near Deastok in "The Mines of the Many" (1x98). The ankhegs had been drawn there by Symphior, a corrupted planetar.

Campaign Two: The Mighty Nein[]

While the Mighty Nein were heading north from Hupperdook towards Shadycreek Run in an effort to catch the Iron Shepherds and rescue Jester, Fjord, and Yasha from enslavement, they decided to not take the path through towards the crossroads but instead take the presumed quicker path around the forest. Making their way around the forest, they discovered an abandoned homestead that was around 200 feet from the northern edge of the Crispvale Thicket. After making camp the party prepared to take a rest; they sensed localized rumbling and the horses being distressed, and the party was assaulted by group of ankhegs that emerged out of the ground and spat acid at their horses, leading to the deaths of Water Closet[8] and Loo.[9]

Exandria Unlimited[]

The Crown Keepers found an adult ankheg in a cage on the Blightstar,[10] and found a baby (pupa) ankheg in a criminal organization's warehouse.[11]

Campaign Three: Bells Hells[]

Sandkheg - Clara

Bells Hells encountered a sandkheg when most of the party members were blown off their skyship, the Silver Sun, during a sandstorm while crossing the Hellcatch Valley. As Fearne played her pan flute to direct the others to her, she noticed vibrations around her and realized she was sinking into the sand, but was able to use a Mirthful Leap to escape the large, claw-like pincers rising around her. However, as FCG approached they both found themselves sinking. Imogen cast Fly on FCG, lifting them both into the air, while Orym ran to Fearne, got between her and the sandkheg, then pushed her away up the slope while wedging his shield inside the creature's mouth. The others were able to escape without battling the creature further and regained the deck of their skyship safely.[12]

Trivia[]

Ankhegs are known to prey on beasts of burden in the night.[13]
