Andica was a historical figure of the Menagerie Coast.[1]

By 831 PD, she was remembered in stories as a vain queen, the wife of King Daldred, and when the evil Taeleron the Cleaver demanded her death in order to spare the kingdom, the peasants believed that Andica would never choose them over herself, but the queen, in a noble sacrifice, took her own life; the tragedy ended with Daldred lamenting his loss.[2]

Lucien Tavelle, who knew the story well, believed a local lord or chief named Daldred had in fact had a wife who made a great sacrifice. However, their story had been altered and popularized in plays and retellings in both the Greying Wildlands and the Dwendalian Empire.[3]

Appearances and mentions[]

Trivia[]

  • Her name seems to come from Andika, an Hungarian nickname of Andrea, which means "manly" in Greek. Alternatively, it could also come from andika, which means "command" or "decree" in Old Javanese.
  • Lucien Tavelle's family performed Daldred's tragedy before Elric's death, and they did again at least once after the eldest child was brought back by Azrahari. Both Lucien and Aldreda thought that the story should end with Andica's sacrifice, since she was more interesting than Daldred, but their parents disagreed.[4]
  • In a puppet show in Rexxentrum, Andica was portrayed as a maiden in white with long raven hair. She described herself in song as a woman with perfect heart-shaped face, and lean, strong limbs.[5]
