Born as a slave, he took the opportunity during the war to escape his shackles. While fleeing, he got cornered and nearly captured again, but a sudden fog let him hide from his pursuers. That is when he decided to change his name to "Fogg". He genuinely believed that this fog was a sentient supernatural being that helped him escape out of good will and believes to recognize the same fog in the cemetery of Deadwood during episode 2. His high reputation precedes him and he gets selected into the group despite arriving to the town only recently.
