An Alchemy Jug is a twelve pound, gallon-sized ceramic jug with a wide mouth[3] that always seems to make sloshing sounds.[4] It is capable of producing liquids of various kinds.[1]
Description[]
Appearance[]
The jug has runes carved along its sides.[5]
Properties[]
Once a day using their action, the person holding the jug may name one liquid from the below table, and the jug will produce up to the maximum amount listed for that liquid, after which that liquid can be poured out at a rate of up to 2 gallons per minute.
Liquid | Maximum Amount |
---|---|
Acid | 8 ounces |
Basic poison | 1/2 ounce |
Beer | 4 gallons |
Honey | 1 gallon |
Mayonnaise | 2 gallons |
Oil | 1 quart |
Vinegar | 2 gallons |
Fresh water | 8 gallons |
Salt water | 12 gallons |
Wine | 1 gallon |
History[]
Grog found the jug while Vox Machina was looting Umbrasyl's lair after slaying him.[6] Pike was able to identify the runes as having to do with transmutation, but was unable to determine any specifics.[7]
Grog initially wanted to break the jug,[8] assuming it had no special properties, but discovered its properties by wishing for beer, of which he drank all four gallons.[9] He also determined it could create different kinds of liquids, after wishing for mayonnaise, which he also consumed in its entirety.[10]
Vox Machina made frequent use of the Alchemy Jug, often in creative ways. Grog used it as a diving bell in the Feywild when going in to the river to rescue Percy from the crocodile,[11] to create water in tribute to the fallen Tiberius in the ruins of Draconia,[12] and to give water as a thank-you gift to Gilmore's parents.[13]
When the party fought the kraken on the Elemental Plane of Water and he had been swallowed by the creature, Grog created oil with the jug and Keyleth ignited it, forcing the Kraken to vomit them up.[14] He also used it - and the fact the jug was large enough to fit any of the party's heads - to create water to allow the party to breathe (with the help of Keyleth's Water Breathing spell) in the airless environment of Scaldseat.[15]
The Alchemy Jug was also frequently used for casual drinking, shenanigans, and at times to escalate the prank war between Grog and Vax.[16] Tary and Grog once made a bet in which ownership of the jug (and Tary's Rod of Mercurial Form) were the stakes.[17]
Trivia[]
- Technically, in its first appearance, after creating beer the night before, the jug should not have been able to create mayonnaise until after dawn, which implies Grog ate two gallons of mayonnaise at sunrise.
- The jug was used to create the following substances at least once:
