Previously on Critical Role[]

So last we left off, through the chaos of Bells Hells, Vox Machina, and Mighty Nein, and many other heroes that rise up to try to halt the unbridled emergence of the Godeater, Bells Hells finally is delivered to the core of the moon Ruidus, where they battled with Predathos itself, which now, upon its defeat, remains dormant temporarily within its vessel, Imogen Temult. After passing beyond the boundaries that kept it locked away for an untold amount of history, you began to step to your trek back towards Exandria. Tense interactions with some of the holy armies that marched upon the moon to stop what you are doing at all costs, without maybe understanding the intent behind it. You eventually are given passage to Vasselheim itself, in the moments of a dimmed sky, which we will return to momentarily, for back within the core of Ruidus, amongst the scattered subterranean tunnels, a wayward troop of adventurers responsible for defeating the Weave Mind and dealing with those who remained to surrender within and around the Arx Creonum, the Mighty Nein, shoulder to shoulder with the battered but still surviving Gaz Tomo and other members of the Volition suddenly received a message to Mr. Caleb here, Mr. Caleb Widogast: Bells Hells asking for their aid, some way to free themselves from Ruidus to get back, to get out from where they were, though not enough to actually find or gather where they might currently reside. As such, hours have passed since, in search. There we find them, scattered amongst the dark underground, the smell of fungus and a distant sad echo to each word spoken in a relatively silent world.

Part I[]

The Mighty Nein have succeeded in their mission to annihilate the Weave Mind, and are aiding the Volition in the subsequent clean-up when Caleb Widogast receives the call from Imogen asking for help for Bells Hells to escape the collapsing interior chambers of the moon. The party spends several hours trying to reach Bells Hells, but eventually receive a message from Essek Thelyss telling them they should return immediately to Vasselheim: something big is happening. Caleb uses his sending stone to contact Orym, who tells him, "Come home quick."

Meanwhile, in Whitestone, Keyleth is awakened by a Sending from Allura Vysoren tell her to come to Vasselheim. Vax'ildan has not spent the night with her, and has apparently gone. She gives the rest of Vox Machina this message as they gradually wake.

Bells Hells are being escorted through a tense and suspicious Vasselheim to the heart of the city, where Highbearer Vord demands to know what has happened. The party tells him they stopped Ludinus Da'leth from claiming the power of Predathos and have contained it within Imogen. They need to speak with the gods as soon as possible. The winged, spectral shape of the Matron of Ravens appears, defending the party, and gradually the images of the other gods take shape around them. The Dawnfather demands of the Matron the reason for her calling the family there, and she urges them to listen to Bells Hells.

Imogen explains that she has Predathos controlled... temporarily. She joined with the entity on Ruidus in order to give the gods a chance to survive and to remain with their children on Exandria. The Matron has rewritten the Rite of Ascension into the Rites of Catatheosis so that they may all return to mortal form, being reborn to live among other mortals. The various gods offer objections and/or support, as the various party members offer more arguments and persuasion. The Matron asserts that these events will not affect The Chained Oblivion's imprisonment, as it is not their kin.

Many of the gods seem deeply opposed, including Asmodeus, who psychically tells Braius he has done well and to find him again, and he will be rewarded. Braius urges Asmodeus to join the other gods in undergoing the Rites, and tells the god that he plans to remain with Bells Hells. Asmodeus is quietly furious, promising to find Braius later. Laudna argues the gods will be remembered even if they are temporarily absent, and their followers will continue to represent their domains. Fearne tells them they may actually enjoy being mortal, joined by Imogen and Dorian arguing that finding each other again will be fun and a new experience, free of the responsibility to their followers. Ashton is rude to The Scaled Tyrant, calling her and those who refuse this offer cowards while Orym is more conciliatory but reminds them this is at least a chance to remain on Exandria. Chetney says that mortals have learned to live with the idea of death, and that the gods can either live, or run... and running is a temporary solution.

The gods discuss this among themselves in their own musical language. Referring to Predathos, Imogen tells them that although the decision is difficult, they must make it quickly, "because I'm getting hungry". With much magical and emotional support from all the other party members, this persuades all of the gods to take the offer and remain.

Ashton's apotheosis - Sabira Langevin

With a cracking sound, the sky opens to reveal the Divine Gate breaking apart, and everyone realizes the gods are once more among them. The physical form of the Matron appears, telling everyone that the ritual requires one more piece: one of the Luxon beacons the Kryn worship as the Luxon. The Bright Queen absolutely refuses. The Matron turns to the crowd, saying she needs a beacon to complete the ritual. Ashton volunteers, indicating their crystalline head with its dunamantic power, and this offer is accepted. After Ashton makes brief and somewhat embarrassed farewells, the Matron sends their body rocketing upward to be caught in a spiderweb of the runes of the ritual. The Matron removes her mask, promising, "We'll return," before replacing it. The horizon brightens around them, filled with the musical language of the gods and the sense of all existence happening at once, all focusing on the small pinpoint of light that was Ashton, far above them, before in a flash it disappears.

The gods are gone, the storm is gone, the runeworked lattice is gone, leaving the sky empty. With effort, Orym just manages to see the limp body of Ashton plummeting toward them. Dorian sends Coriolis, but the steed is unable to catch the falling body and Dorian then invokes his winged boots. Imogen grabs Laudna and they fly upward but are unable to synch up with the descent. At her urging, Imogen drops Laudna so she can try to Shadow Walk into Darkness and Ashton's shadow. Fearne wildshapes into a shoebill with Orym on her back, and Chetney runs toward the path of descent holding the Staff of Dark Odyssey with Banishment prepped. While the others' efforts narrowly fail, they slow the fall just enough for Chetney to get within range, sending Ashton to another plane for one minute.

However, the other two parties, Vox Machina and the Mighty Nein, have now arrived. Caleb prepares Telekinesis and Chetney releases the spell, causing Ashton to reappear and allowing Caleb's spell to lower them to the ground. The crystal in Ashton's head is gone, leaving a gaping wound. Pike attempts a Resurrection but it fails to find purchase, as does Caleb's Transmuter's Stone when he places it in Ashton's head. They realize something is missing and Fearne unsuccessfully demands the Beacon from the Bright Queen. Laudna spots a disguised Essek Thelyss in the crowd and begs him for a Potion of Possibility. With a deep sigh, Essek places his hand over Caleb's on Ashton's body, and as dunamancy flashes in Ashton's head time reverses, filling it once more with crystal from the now-disappeared stone. With an explosion of arcane energy, Essek is blown backward, his disguise dropping, but the Raise Dead takes effect and Ashton's eyes open. Kryn soldiers encircle the now-exposed ex-Shadowhand Essek, who quickly Teleports away.

Imogen can feel Predathos within her, pushing to escape and feed, causing increasing occasional sharp pains. They consider how to free her from the entity and move up the Heaven's Stair Mountain, followed by priests and acolytes who fall back as they move past the temples and into the mountains themselves. When they are alone, Imogen reaches inside, telling the now-childlike Predathos that there is nothing for it here. It grows angry and bursts from within her, guided and released by Imogen, spreading its consciousness everywhere before, with a sigh, drifting off into the stars. Above them, the sun has just set, and the white moon Catha and the now-freed red moon Ruidus are rising.

The Matron removing her mask - Adrian Ibarra Lugo

In a dark, shadowy realm criss-crossed by golden threads of fate, Vax'ildan suddenly arrives, recalled from his one allowed night in Whitestone. The Matron of Ravens welcomes him, as well as another figure: Morrighan Ferus, lagomore Chosen of the Matron. Morrighan has never been called here before and is in awe of meeting Vax'ildan, of whom she has often heard as the Champion of the Matron, whereas Vax'ildan is surprised to see another person here for the first time. The Matron tells them briefly what has happened and that she will now be reborn as a mortal. It will be their roles as wardens of her domain to maintain the sanctity of life and death, and she imbues Morrighan as her newest Champion alongside Vax'ildan. They must seek out her new body each time it is reborn, and they themselves will live indefinitely. She urges him to take some time while on Exandria for his own enjoyment, and, placing her hand on his chest, causes his heart to start beating again and color to come into his face.

Meanwhile, The Dawnfather calls Deanna Leimert to him. They reconcile, somewhat apologetically, before he fades away to mortality. When she returns to Vasselheim she realizes everyone of deep faith has had a similar experience. She and her companion, FRIDA, see Ashton's body falling from the sky and follow where they are told Bells Hells have gone, up the Heaven's Stair, when they see an explosion of purple energy above them and spot the party, now free of Predathos. The two groups greet each other, introduce the new members of Bells Hells, and catch up. Imogen starts to tell FRIDA of Fresh Cut Grass's death, but FRIDA had sensed it. The subject turns to what effect the gods being mortal will have on their champions and followers, and Fearne summons Teven Klask, who escorts her away from the group. He tells her Asmodeus will return, and in the meantime his followers will keep his temples until he is found and rises again, and they will need her then. Her contract with him is for life.

Suddenly, many Bastions approach, accompanied by Highbearer Vord and looking fearful. Orym reassures them. Vord is highly suspicious of Imogen, who tries to apologize. High Hierophant Ophera approaches, calming Vord by telling him that the gods chose this. The Highbearer is very apprehensive, finally sheathing his blade but still wondering what is to become of Vasselheim, the Cradle of Faith. Earthbreaker Groon approaches as well and comforts him, telling him they will mourn together. Laudna is irritated, feeling they're acting as though Bells Hells ruined their future instead of saving the world. The others note that Vasselheim must now let go of the thing they devoted their lives to.

Fearne suggests they check on Opal, the Champion of Lolth, the Spider Queen. Via Sending, Imogen contacts her, and Opal responds hesitantly that she thinks she's all right, and her head is quiet, and she thinks she's close to them. Imogen tells her where to find them.

FRIDA shares with Chetney that they are now a werewolf from Chetney's bite[1] and asks for advice and Chetney's guidance dealing with lycanthropy. Chetney is honored and accepts, and FRIDA presents him with something they crafted: a jeweled model of an aeormaton heart.

Groon and Ophera return, telling them that they've been told of the Ruidians who were expecting transport to Exandria and would like Bells Hells to join the discussion. They are escorted back downward, meeting Opal on the way, still wearing the Circlet of Barbed Vision. Fearne and Orym greet her joyfully, and Dorian watches happily then introduces the rest of the party. Opal, however, is still bound to The Spider Queen forever although now temporarily free. When they reach the Platinum Sanctuary, Opal's entrance is barred.

Inside, there is a robust debate over what to do with the bormodos and reilora that wish to travel to Exandria. Members of all three adventuring parties present their arguments for allowing the Ruidians to immigrate, bolstered by Planerider Ryn. Ophera decides the Ruidians will be allowed through the Lake Umamu portal and taken in by the cities that agree, which are spread across the various continents of Exandria. Later, Orym finds Ryn with Rashinna of the Volition making plans for the Ruidians, and asks to pray with her privately. He lays Seedling on her lap and prays to The Wildmother, allowing Ryn to attune to the blade and regenerate her arm.

Laudna and Imogen's bond by Rachel F. (TheWhaleLord)

Laudna (and Imogen) seeks out Lieve'tel Toluse, and Laudna asks what her future is as not-quite-alive with the Matron of Ravens gone. Lieve'tel invites her to join them in the Duskmeadow, but Laudna wants to age alongside Imogen. Lieve'tel uses Divine Intervention to join their threads of fate together, granting this wish. Imogen then seeks out Liliana, her mother and encourages her to return to Gelvaan and talk to Relvin, the husband she abandoned.

Meanwhile, Braius' mind flashes back to the moment of the shattering of the Divine Gate, when he found himself pulled into a fiery abyss facing Asmodeus, who asks if he is proud of what he's done. Braius is proud of some of it. Asmodeus invites him to continue, and when he returns, they'll have great things to do together. Braius finds this very tempting, but decides he prefers not having a singular purpose. Asmodeus is enraged, furiously promising to find him once he has returned, before pulling back into the darkness. Braius' thoughts return to the present time, pledging his loyalties to Bells Hells in the hopes they will similarly pledge to defend him. He finally admits he fucked up and Asmodeus is going to come back and kill him-- somewhere there's a baby that's going to kill him. Fearne offers that he could come with her to hide out in the Feywild, but Braius thinks maybe he could start following this god in a pamphlet Jester gave him, about the Traveler. Braius promises he has their backs.

Dorian and his mother - Zhellers

They all decide to return to Jrusar and spend a week together just revisiting their old haunts and relaxing. Dorian briefly rides Coriolis up to the Silken Squall to visit his mother Nephele. He fears she hates him for Cyrus' death but she welcomes and comforts him. While in Jrusar, the group checks in with Zhudanna (who has rented Imogen and Laudna's old room out to Prism Grimpoppy), Pretty (dating), and Milo Krook, who repairs Ashton. They reminisce and toast the memory of FCG. While on a gondola, Orym tells Dorian he wants to spend his days with him caring for him. Dorian agrees before the sentence is finished, asking only that they take it day-by-day, seeing what they become together, and they agree to travel to Zephrah together.

Ashton asks Fearne her plans. She wants to get to know her parents better and talk to Nana Morri about studying fate stitching, and explore her father's connection with the Unseelie Court. Most importantly, she wants to collect all five of Chetney's eggs. She asks to come with Ashton on his explorations, but he asks that, whatever the nature of their relationship will be, she take some time to think about it.

Orym, accompanied by Fearne, Dorian, and Opal, goes to Zephrah, where they find Dariax trying his best to musically entertain the locals just as Deni$e arrives. Dariax is taken aback (and wonders how they got pre-engaged), and protests he meant to come back to her; he forgot, and he apologizes. Dariax has been oblivious to recent events but wants to socialize with them. Orym goes to visit Keyleth, telling her that as much as he loves being part of her guard, he now has other places to go and other responsibilities (indicating Dorian), and would like to represent the Ashari out in the world. She responds that he deserves happiness, wishes them all the best, and they all drink wine together and bond. As the Crown Keepers later make their way unsteadily through town, they catch sight of reilora and bormodos being shown around.

Laudna and Imogen's cottage - Nolagranola

Fan art of Laudna and Imogen's cottage, by nolagranola.[art 5]

Chetney introduces FRIDA to the Gorgynei, and visits his old toy shop in Uthodurn to find Oltgar thriving. He also gifts Jester a carved wooden jellyfish as a wedding present. Fearne visits Nana Morri in the Feywild and studies under her. With the Matron gone, no one is watching the skeins of fate and Nana's having a good time. At some point, they get a visit from Ira Wendagoth, courting Morrigan, who tells Fearne the Unseelie are seeking revenge against her for the death of her father. Fearne is unworried, and more importantly, succeeds in recovering 3 of the 5 missing eggs carved by Chetney. Ashton talks to Essek about the dunamancy in their head, but notices that the Bright Queen is also taking an interest in them, then explores both Exandria and Ruidus. Braius pursues his art, joining up with Jester in her art gallery. She admits to him that The Traveler isn't really a true god, but one night Braius is visited by him and welcomed into the congregation. Orym is and will always be a Tempest Blade, serving Zephrah abroad. While Dorian is heir to the throne, his parents are still young and healthy and they are free to travel. Orym visits Nana Morri, who admits that she had no control over what happened on Ruidus and their "deal" isn't binding on him. As Dorian gets older, his wildness fades somewhat and he becomes the linchpin of the group, drawing them together frequently. Imogen and Laudna spend some time helping the immigrants coming through Lake Umamu. Eventually they build a cottage in the Taloned Highlands and settle down with Imogen's favorite horse, Flora. Imogen's mother Liliana travels, visiting occasionally, trying to find her place in the world.

Of the Mighty Nein, Fjord and Jester spend some time on Ruidus, and begin planning their upcoming wedding. Caleb is initially worried for Essek's safety, but learns that although the Dynasty is interested in his whereabouts, they are not an immediate threat. Caleb becomes an advisor to governments all over the world, and prepares for Ludinus Da'leth's inevitable return. One day, he tries Scrying on him and sees him in a simple cottage with clouds or mist visible outside the doorway, presumably in the Shattered Teeth. When he shares this with Beau, she tells him she's taking some time off to become a parent with Yasha.

Of Vox Machina, Grog explores Ruidus with Gaz Tomo. Scanlan takes Cerkonos under his wing, advising him to be himself and go to Lieve'tel. When he does, she tells him he's overthinking it-- just bring the heat, and draws him inside. Whitestone profits by its residuum becoming more valuable with the magical disruption and Percival begins preparing the children for taking over as he senses retirement approaching, wanting them to locate the gods before anyone else does. He and Vex'ahlia begin stepping away from their duties and traveling together. Keyleth locates one of the newborn gods through the network of primordial trees, but doesn't tell anyone. Pike feels a huge loss of purpose from the departure of the Everlight, and Scanlan admits that adventuring isn't as much fun without her. They begin traveling together, and since Pike is really into centaurs he True Polymorphs her into one as well. Fifteen years later, the newborn Sarenrae is found and Pike goes to join her.

With that, the Era of Reclamation comes to a close, beginning a new age in Exandrian history.

A week after the events in Vasselheim, there is a knock on Keyleth's door and Vax'ildan stands there. She's been waiting for him, and he explains it is still his duty to carry out the Matron's will, but that duty now brings him home. Keyleth welcomes him inside and they agree to begin again. Through the following years, although Vax'ildan's duty takes him away much of the time, every now and then Keyleth's Champion comes to visit.

Quotations[]

  • Braius: (to Asmodeus) I'm sorry that I couldn't be truer to you, but when I promised you I would betray them, I guess I lied.
  • Ashton: I am Ashton Greymoore of Bassuras and I am nobody's child. Not the gods, not anybody.
  • Ashton: (toasting) To FCG, who could always see the worst in everybody but chose to only honor the best.
  • Dorian: (to Orym) I don't know anything anymore, but the only thing I know is that I want to be with you, and I hope just for now-- just for now-- that can be enough and it can carry us through.
Orym: I know day-by-day. We can take it day-by-day.
Dorian: That's a promise. I'll be here in the morning.
Orym: I'll be here in the morning. [...] So much hardship. Such a long road. But I can't say that it's all been bad, because it brought you to me.
Dorian: It has not all been bad. I don't know if today that I can say it was worth it all, but I think there's a chance these dark things brought us to where we are. It's hard to let them in. It's hard to let them in. But what matters is today.
    Orym: Day-by-day.
  • Orym: For the longest time I've walked under the light of the moons, but I think it's time I spent some time with the sun. In the clear blue sky.[2]

  • Vax'ildan: I loved you fiercely in life, and forgive me, but I loved you fiercely beyond it as well. And I know how hard that was. I have no expectations. But... if you would, could we start over?
Keyleth: I have been lying in wait, in perpetual stasis. It's felt like falling and never knowing when the ground will come. I think I've been waiting for my devilish rogue with wings to catch me again. I would love to start over.
    Vax'ildan: Begin again.
Keyleth: But it will have to be a beginning, if that's okay with you.
Vax'ildan: Every good story needs a start.
Keyleth: I've missed you so much.
Vax'ildan: I was never that far away.
Keyleth: I know. That's part of what always made it so hard. Maybe we could go on a date?
Vax'ildan: I would like that very much.
Keyleth: My name's Keyleth, and you're the love of my life.
Vax'ildan: If you will have me, I am yours, Keyleth of the Air Ashari.

Trivia[]

  • This is the longest episode of Critical Role to date, with a runtime of over 8 hours, surpassing the previous record holder "Fond Farewells" (2x141).
  • The episode was recorded in two separate sessions. It began on 7 January 2025, the same day that wind-blown wildfires began engulfing Los Angeles. When the city declared an emergency and the studio lost power, it was decided to halt recording at the break and return when the situation was safe. Recording resumed on Friday, January 17th.[3] and the entire episode was released on 6 February 2025.[4]
  • Emily Axford was supposed to be in this episode to play Prism Grimpoppy, but due to the re-scheduling of the episode because of the Los Angeles wildfires, she wasn't able to make it.[5]
  • Aimee Carrero was pregnant during the recording of the episode, and admitted she thought the audience could notice.[6] That makes her the second cast member that successfully hid a pregnancy during a Critical Role episode (the first one being Laura Bailey).
  • This is the seventeenth episode in which at least one player plays multiple characters, with the main cast reprising their Mighty Nein and Vox Machina characters on top of playing Bells Hells as well as Robbie Daymond playing both Dorian Storm and Cerkonos and Aimee Carrero playing both Opal and Deni$e Bembachula.[7]
  • The decision to reunite Vax and Keyleth was made in consultation with both their players, because they were cognizant of not wanting to cheapen the tragic ending of Campaign One.[8]
  • During the first part, Sam is wearing the same shirt he had in the first episode of Campaign Three, "The Draw of Destiny" (3x01).
  • Sam's Stanley cup reads "Let's do it again"[9], the now famous line that Travis pronounced at the end of the last episodes of Campaign One and Two.[10][11]
