Obviously, I'm not a crew nor cast member of Critical Role, so I can't speak on their behalf! Still, from what I know of both digital and traditional mediums, I can only reason the following. The art highlight reel is just that: a highlight of the submitted fanart by the Critters. Here, we have a bunch of factors why we see a lot more digital work than traditional. I'm guessing that already a majority of what is being submitted is digital-- heck, look around the critical role communities on different social medias and you will see the amount of digital work dwarfs that of traditional pieces. I don't think it's fair to call digital art an exclusive club by any means. It's just more accessible (especially financially) to produced diverse, finished and screen-ready pieces; a tablet may be a tool, but it's an unbelievably powerful one. Critical Role is also viewed digitally (presumably on a screen), so digital artists have one less hurdle to worry about in presenting their work as it's meant to be seen, compared the variety of hiccups to overcome when scanning or photographing a physical work, with problems ranging from dodgy colors to poor photo quality. I find it hard to believe that anyone would hate the fan works dedicated to their passion project. But as for who gets the spotlight, it's not that far-fetched to see the seeming lack of traditional mediums in the artists reel. Does this mean to drop everything and pick up a tablet? Not necessarily, no! At the end of the day, quality and stick-to-it-iveness will eventually see you through to the other side. Good luck!
