I am not a fan of the “it’s Thursday night” intro that Critical Role has implemented in Campaign 3. I feel the song is less well composed than the previously used “Your turn to roll” song. As well as being tied to a now arbitrary date that many fans don’t end up watch the show on (it’s YouTube release is on Monday.)
The music is a smaller critique compared to the animation. The previous campaign’s animation showed us the characters we would be watching, displaying their abilities in situations they could encounter.
As well as showing us nods to the characters personalities and backstories, thus reminding us of who the characters we are following are.
The new animation shows us the cast wearing their normal attire doing vaguely analogous actions to what their characters do, and the transitions are at times nonsensical. They opted to use rotoscoping which maps animation onto their real selves, this combined with the nonexistent background setting and simple animation additions means they might as well have just forgone animation and used special effects to construct it. I guess I feel it lacks the heart and immersion that previous animation had.
Sorry for the rant, I wanted to put my feelings on the subject out there.
If anyone else has thoughts on the subject I’d like to hear them.
